Virgil F. Stenberg, 91, of Dell Rapids passed away on Sunday, September 28, 2014 at the Dells Area Health Center. His Funeral Service will begin at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 2, 2014 at the Lutheran Church of Dell Rapids Chapel. Interment will be in the Colman Cemetery, Colman, SD. Visitation will begin on Wednesday, October 1, 2014 at 3:00 p.m. with the family present from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. at Kahler Funeral Home. Condolences may be left at http://www.kahlerfh.com.
He was born on March 14, 1923 in Colman, South Dakota to the late Alma Skjonning (Sorensen) and Ove Jensen Stenberg. He was a graduate of Egan High School.
Virgil served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II. After the war he farmed near Colman, then moved to Everett, Washington and worked until the family moved back to South Dakota to farm near Brookings. He also worked at South Dakota State University as head carpenter until his retirement.
Virgil was a loving husband and father. A great storyteller, he often entertained the family with stories of growing up on the farm near Colman. Although he was always busy, he was also full of fun and ready to chat with anyone. He dearly enjoyed music, whist and the barn cats. He was a truly loving, generous and hardworking man who will be dearly missed.
He was preceded in death by his daughter Cheralyn Ann, brothers DeVere and Robert Stenberg and his sister Elizabeth Cox (F.M.).
He is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Norma Alvina (Opland), and his children and their spouses, Thomas G. Stenberg and Germaine (Arendt) of Volga, SD, Nancy E. Morrison and Edward of Auburn, AL, Scott L. Stenberg and Tawni (Myre) of Monticello, WI, and Kent A. Stenberg and Kathi (Fair) of Warrenton, MO. He is also survived by his sister Arlene Lellelid of St. Paul, MN, and his brothers, Bennett and David of Colman, SD.
