Fourth Quarter Rally Comes up Short for Cardinal Boys

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals made a furious comeback attempt in the fourth quarter, but ultimately ran out of time.  The Cardinals fell to the Madison Bulldogs 70-63 at the Dakota Valley Conference Border Clash in Colman on Saturday, January 14th.

Madison controlled the game for three and half quarters of the game.  The Bulldogs led 20-9 at the end of the first quarter and 41-15 at halftime.  St Mary cut the lead to 52-32 by the end of the third quarter.  Madison led by 21 points, 64-43, with 3:00 to play.  The Cardinals then went on a big run and outscored Madison 20-2.  St Mary cut the lead to 66-63 with about :12 to go in the game.  Madison, however, made four free throws in the closing seconds to hang on for the win.

The Cardinals shot 38% (20-53) from the field overall, 38% (12-32) from three-point area, and 69% (11-16) from the free-throw line.  Madison shot 52% (26-50) overall, 31% (5-16) from three-point area, and 65% (13-20) from the free-throw line.

Trevon Beckman had 21 points, eight rebounds, and two assists.  Maverick LeBrun finished with 17 points and three assists.  Nic Gaspar had 15 points, 12 rebounds, and two assists.  Trimmier Hanson ended with seven points, five rebounds, and three assists.
