Late Rally Comes up Short for St Mary Boys

A late rally in the fourth quarter fell short for the St Mary’s Cardinal boys as the Elkton-Lake Benton Elks held for a 52-42 win on Tuesday, January 13th.

The Cardinals and Elks played to a 10-10 tie by the end of the first quarter.  Elkton-Lake Benton would go on a run in the second quarter and take a 22-13 lead with 2:30 in the half.  They ended the first half with a 27-17 lead.

The Elks were able to extend their lead to 41-25 with 2:25 to go in the third quarter.  The two teams were unable to score any more points, and Elkton-Lake Benton led 41-25 after three quarters.  The Elks pushed that lead to a game-high 22 points, 47-25, with 5:35 left in the game.  St Mary then started to make a furious come back.  The Cardinals got within seven points, 49-42, with 1:30 to play, but the Elks were able to hold the Cardinals the rest of the game and make three free throws down the stretch to win.

St Mary’s shot just 28% (15-54) in the game overall, 21% (6-28) on three-point attempts, and 6-10 from the free-throw line.  Elkton-Lake Benton finished the game shooting 39% (22-57) overall, 25% (5-20) on three-point attempts, and 3-7 from the free-throw line.

Isaac Griffin had 15 points, seven rebounds, and three steals.  Peyton Lamb added seven points and eight rebounds.  Lincoln LeBrun ended with six points and five rebounds.  Joseph Trumbauer had four points and five rebounds.
