Late Second Half Run Leads to Win for Cardinal Boys

A big run late in the second half was key to a 67-44 win over the Elkton-Lake Benton Elks for the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal boys on Saturday, February 17th.  The game was played less than 24 hours after the Cardinals had defeated the Baltic Bulldogs.

The Cardinals built a seven-point lead by the end of the first quarter, 16-9.  The Elks pulled within two points in the second quarter, 20-18, but St Mary finished the half on a 10-2 run for a 30-20 lead.  Elkton-Lake Benton had a strong third quarter and cut the lead to three points, 39-36, with 2:45 remaining in the quarter.  That’s when the Cardinals went on a big run.  They ended the third quarter on an 11-2 run for a 50-38 lead going into the fourth quarter.  They then scored the first 14 points of the fourth quarter to lead 64-38.

St Mary shot 53% (24-45) from the field overall, 55% (12-22) from three-point area, and 58% (7-12) from the free-throw line.  The Elks finished the game shooting 38% (18-47) overall, 21% (3-14) from three-point area, and 71% (5-7) from the free-throw line.

Treven Beckman finished with 31 points, nine rebounds, and two assists.  Maverick LeBrun added 16 points and six rebounds.  Trimmier Hanson had eight points, three rebounds, and four assists.  Nic Gaspar ended with six points and four rebounds.
