The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal boys basketball team got matched up against the #4 team in Class A, the Sioux Valley Cossacks, for the Entringer Classic in Brookings on Saturday, December 30th. The Cardinals were within four points in the second half and had chances to cut into the lead even more, but the Cossacks held for a 59-47 win.
St Mary made a couple of big shots late in the first quarter for a 14-12 lead after the first period. Sioux Valley bounced back in the second quarter and took a 29-23 lead into halftime. After the Cossacks built a 12-point lead in the third quarter, the Cardinals pulled within four points. Sioux Valley, however, ended the quarter with a 44-37 lead. The Cardinals were within seven points, 52-45, with 2:00 to go in the game, but Cossacks ended the game on a 7-2 run.
St Mary shot 33% (17-52) overall, 30% (9-30) on three-point attempts, and 4-6 from the free-throw line. Sioux Valley was 48% (25-52) shooting overall, 33% (6-18) on three-point attempts, and 3-6 from the free-throw line. The Cossacks out-rebounded the Cardinals 37-23 in the game.
Trevon Beckman had 22 points, seven rebounds, four steals, and three assists in the game. Trimmier Hanson had nine points, six rebounds, and three assists. Nic Gaspar also had nine points with four rebounds, and three assists. Maverick LeBrun and Lincoln LeBrun both had three points each.
