The Colman-Egan Hawks gave the St Mary Cardinals everything they had in the Region 3B tournament in Chester on Saturday, March 8th. The Cardinals overcame a deficit in the fourth quarter and advanced to the SoDak 16 with a 69-59 win over the Hawks.
The game was close all game long. The Cardinals held just a four-point lead, 19-15, after the end of the first quarter. The scores got reversed in the second quarter, and the game was tied 34-34 at halftime. St Mary held a three-point lead, 45-42, with 2:45 to play in the third quarter before extended the lead to 52-44 with 1:00 to go. Colman-Egan went on a run and cut the lead to 52-49 by the end of the third quarter.
The Hawks kept their run going to start the fourth quarter. Colman-Egan scored the first six points of the quarter to go in front 55-52 with 6:00 to play. The run was 11-0 from the end of the third quarter through the early part of the fourth quarter. The Hawks led 57-56 with 4:40 to play in the game, but that’s when St Mary went on their run. The Cardinals went on an 11-0 run as well and led 67-57 with 2:10 left in the game. Each team scored just two more points each by the end of the game.
St Mary shot 49% (23-47) overall in the game, 36% (8-22) from three-point area, and 71% (15-21) from the free-throw line. Colman-Egan was 50% (22-44) from the field overall, 43% (6-14) on three-point shots, and 64% (9-14) from the free-throw line.
Trevon Beckman finished with 26 points, 10 rebounds, and five assists. Maverick LeBrun added 22 points, eight rebounds, two assists, and three steals. Trimmier Hanson had 12 points, six rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Jake Kopsas had four points and four rebounds.
