Cardinal Boys Start Season with Win over Defending State Champs

The St Mary Cardinal boys basketball team opened their 2024-2025 season with a home game against the defending State B Champions, Howard Tigers, on Friday, December 13th.  The Cardinals overcame a first half deficit for a 62-48 win.

Howard built a double digit lead, 17-7, with under a minute to play in the first quarter.  St Mary ended the quarter trailing by nine points, 17-8.  The Cardinals got within a point in the second quarter, but the half ended with Howard leading 27-25.

The third quarter went back and forth with each team having a lead.  St Mary ended the quarter by taking a 41-39 lead after a Maverick LeBrun layup with under :05 to go.  The Cardinals then went on a 16-0 run over the first four minutes of the fourth quarter to extend their lead to 57-39.  That run put the game away as St Mary held the Tigers to just nine total fourth quarter points.

St Mary shot 47% (23-49) from the field overall, 33% (7-21) from three-point area, and 7-9 from the free-throw line.  Howard finished the game shooting 29% (15-52) overall, 33% (8-24) from three-point area, and 83% (10-12) from the free-throw line.

Three players finished in double figures.  Trevon Beckman had 21 points, eight rebounds, and three assists. LeBrun had 17 points, 13 rebounds, and three blocked shots.  Trimmier Hanson added 16 points, three assists, and a steal.
