The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal boys got back into a win column with a nice win over the Gregory Gorillas at the DWU Culver’s Classic in Mitchell on Saturday, February 10th. The Cardinals took the lead in the first quarter and took the win 59-53.
St Mary got out to a fast start and built a 14-2 lead. Gregory calmed down and ended the first quarter on an 8-2 run for a 16-10 score at the end of the quarter. The Gorillas continued the momentum and took a 23-22 lead in the second quarter, but that was the only lead they would have. The Cardinals went on a 11-2 run for a 33-25 halftime lead. Gregory cut the lead in half in the third quarter and trailed 45-41 going into the fourth quarter. St Mary was able to stay in front the entire fourth quarter for the win.
The Cardinals shot 45% (21-47) from the field overall, 36% (11-31) on three-point attempts, and 50% (6-12) from the free-throw line. Gregory shot 43% (20-47) overall, 17% (1-6) from three-point area, and 75% (12-16) from the free-throw line.
Maverick LeBrun had 20 points, nine rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Trevon Beckman finished with 16 points, six rebounds, eight assists, and four steals. Nic Gaspar added 10 points, six rebounds, four assists, and two steals. Trimmier Hanson had seven points, and Owen Vargas had six points.
