The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal cross country team will have a new head coach for 2023. Mitchell Roemen takes over as the head coach and is back in the program exactly 10 years after participating as a student athlete for St Mary.
“This will be my first year coaching at St Mary having last participated in the program exactly 10 years ago. I’ll be leaning on our runners’ knowledge of each others abilities along with experience of having participated in the sport,” said Roemen.
The girls team finished fourth at regions last year and sent three individual runners to state in Madison Reiff, Elizabeth Vogel, and Cami Wolles. Vogel had a 21st place finish at the state meet. This year’s team will be led by those three runners.
“Our girls’ team is young, but very talented, which is very exciting as there is opportunity for them to improve and compete to make it to the state meet as a team,” added Roemen.
The boys team did not have any runners quality for state last year, but the team will be looking to do that this year with the experience returning. The boys will be led by Camden Tebay and Matthew Heinemann.
Reomen noted, “Our boys team also has the opportunity to get runners qualified for state as we had two runners last year just outside of qualifying. The most exciting thing that I am looking forward to this season is the drive to compete that our runners have. It will make for enjoyable practices and meets.”
The Cardinals cross country season will start on Saturday, August 26th in White at the Deubrook Invite.
