The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals (14-4) had a chance to tie the game with a last-second three-point attempt, but the shot, and comeback, fell short against the Viborg-Hurley Cougars on Monday, February 20th. The Cougars spoiled the St Mary senior night with a 63-60 victory.
Dylan Mathis got to open the game with a layup for the Cardinals. That moment gave the Cardinals a spark in the first quarter. St Mary ended the quarter with a 16-15 lead. Viborg-Hurley’s defense, however, held the Cardinals to just seven second-quarter points, and the Cougars led 34-23 at halftime. After the Cougars made the first two points of the second half, St Mary went on a run and cut the lead to two points, 36-34. Viborg-Hurley responded with a 12-3 run to end the quarter for a 48-37 lead going into the fourth quarter. The Cardinals rallied again and got within a point two times, 57-56 and 59-58, but they couldn’t quite get over the hump to complete the comeback.
St Mary shot 44% (23-52) overall in the game, 48% (11-23) from three-point area, and 3-4 from the free-throw line. Viborg-Hurley finished the game shooting 54% (25-46) overall, 45% (9-20) on three-point attempts, and 4-5 from the free-throw line.
Three players finished in double figures. Trevon Beckman had 17 points, five rebounds, and three steals. Nic Gaspar had 15 points, five rebounds, and two assists. CJ Smith ended with 12 points, seven rebounds, and three steals. Maverick LeBrun added eight points, two rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Trimmier Hanson had six points, seven assists, and three steals. Mathis had two points.
