Cardinal Boys Win Big at Entringer Classic

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal boys got a big win at the Entringer Classic in Brookings on Saturday, December 31st.  After almost two weeks since their last game, the Cardinals defeated the Waverly-South Shore Coyotes 68-35.

The Cardinals only held a seven-point lead, 22-15, at the end of the first quarter, but used a big run to end the half and blow the game open.  St Mary led 32-19 with about two minutes left in the second quarter, and then went on a 12-0 run for a 44-19 lead at halftime.  The Cardinals outscored the Coyotes 14-10 in the third quarter and then held them to just six points in the final quarter.

St Mary shot 46% (24-52) from the field, 39% (9-23) from three-point area, and 73% (11-15) from the free-throw line.  The Coyotes finished 35% (15-43) overall, 17% (2-12) from three-point area, and 27% (3-11) from the free-throw line.  The Cardinals forced 17 turnovers, 12 of those on steals.

The players finished in double figures.  Nic Gaspar, named the game’s MVP, had 22 points, five rebounds, three assists, and two steals.  Trevon Beckman had 20 points, eight rebounds, and three steals.  Maverick LeBrun added 14 points and two rebounds.  CJ Smith had six points, seven rebounds, four assists, and three steals.
