Manuela Neuman

Memorial services will begin at 1 p.m. Thurs., Oct. 9, for Manuela Neuman, 57, Madison, who died on Oct. 6, 2014 (today), at Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls. The Rev. Alan Blankingfield will officiate at the Weiland Funeral Chapel in Madison.

Manuela Dasch was born on March 29, 1957, at Kreiburg, Germany, to Franz and Heidi (Passion) Dasch. She lived in Germany until age 11, when the family moved to Minneapolis. She married Thomas Neuman on April 26, 1975, at Minneapolis. They moved to Madison in 1984 and she worked at Pamida/Shopko for 26 years.

She was active in Almost Home Canine Rescue.

Survivors include two daughters, Nicole (Dustin) Shiffer of Madison, and Renae (Kelly) Heinemann of Dell Rapids; five grandchildren; her mother, Heidi Dasch of Brooklyn Center, Minn.; and two brothers, Wolfgang and Ferdnand Dasch, both of Wandkriburg, Germany.

She was preceded in death by her father and her husband, Tom in 2007.

Fred Smith

Fred P. Smith, 67, formerly of Oral, SD, died peacefully on Sept. 28, 2014, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

He was born Jan. 3, 1947, to Junior C. and Rosalie M. (Thompson) Smith in Hayes, KS. Fred moved with his family to Oral in June of 1956, where they had purchased a unit on the Angostura Irrigation Project. Fred was raised on the farm and attended elementary school there where he made lifelong friends.

He graduated from Hot Springs High School in 1965, where he had excelled in academics and football. He enjoyed these years and the many good friends he had. He attended South Dakota State University. In 1968, he enlisted with the U.S. Marine Corps and served his country in Vietnam. He was honorably discharged in 1973.

On August 2, 1969, on a very hot day, Fred married Susan M. Rodman in Smithwick, SD. Together they had three children. Fred, Susan, Pat and Shauna lived in North Carolina briefly before Fred’s discharge. They returned to Oral and farmed and ranched in partnership with his father. During these years Fred worked hard providing for his family. He played softball and enjoyed his kids’ activities.

In his retirement Fred thoroughly enjoyed going shooting with his grandson, keeping up on the grandchildrens sports, academics and actvities, fantasy football, watching sports, being with friends and family and listening to music. Fred was very good at making people laugh with a sense of humor that would not stop. He had extreme attention to detail and he was a very smart man. He loved his family very much.

He is survived by his son, Pat (Julie) Smith of Willow City, ND; daughters, Shauna (Mick) Hoglund of Dell Rapids, and Stacy (Bill) Langer of Rapid City; grandchildren, Dawson, Quade, Trista, Morgan, Ty, Reed, Jessi and Kelly; and mother-in-law, Helen Hattervig of Dell Rapids.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 4, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Hot Springs, with Pastor Dwayne Hunzeker officiating. Interment will follow at the Fairview Cemetery near Oral.

A memorial in Fred’s name has been established to benefit the Hot Springs Bison Booster Club.

Susan (Trotter) Heldt

Susan J. Heldt, 67, died Friday Sept. 26, 2014, at Seasons Hospice in Rochester, Minn. Funeral services are at 11 a.m. Saturday at Mt. Olive Lutheran Church in Rochester, Minn., with the Rev. Paul Moody officiating. Private burial is at Graceland Cemetery in Madison.

Susan Jane Trotter was born Sept. 9, 1947, at Redlands, Calif., to John and Jean (Sunde) Trotter. She graduated from Colton High School at Colton and earned an associate degree in business from General Beadle State College, Madison. Susan married Peter Heldt on June 10, 1967 and resided in Mapleton, Minn., and Rochester, Minn. She attended Mankato State College earning bachelor and master degrees and was a certified reading consultant. Susan taught at Kellogg Middle School, was a charter staff member of Century High School, and after retirement was adjunct reading instructor at Rochester Community and Technical College.

Survivors include her husband Peter of Rochester, Minn.; a daughter, Tana (Dale) Visser of Lindenhurst, Ill.; a son Greg (Shannon) Heldt of Rochester, Minn.; four grandchildren; a sister, Sharon (Jess) Hegge of Dell Rapids and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents. Memorials may be directed to Minnesota Ovarian Cancer Research or Mayo Clinic Cancer Research or Seasons Hospice of Rochester.

Virgil Stenberg

Virgil F. Stenberg, 91, of Dell Rapids passed away on Sunday, September 28, 2014 at the Dells Area Health Center. His Funeral Service will begin at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 2, 2014 at the Lutheran Church of Dell Rapids Chapel. Interment will be in the Colman Cemetery, Colman, SD. Visitation will begin on Wednesday, October 1, 2014 at 3:00 p.m. with the family present from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. at Kahler Funeral Home. Condolences may be left at http://www.kahlerfh.com.

He was born on March 14, 1923 in Colman, South Dakota to the late Alma Skjonning (Sorensen) and Ove Jensen Stenberg. He was a graduate of Egan High School.

Virgil served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II. After the war he farmed near Colman, then moved to Everett, Washington and worked until the family moved back to South Dakota to farm near Brookings. He also worked at South Dakota State University as head carpenter until his retirement.

Virgil was a loving husband and father. A great storyteller, he often entertained the family with stories of growing up on the farm near Colman. Although he was always busy, he was also full of fun and ready to chat with anyone. He dearly enjoyed music, whist and the barn cats. He was a truly loving, generous and hardworking man who will be dearly missed.

He was preceded in death by his daughter Cheralyn Ann, brothers DeVere and Robert Stenberg and his sister Elizabeth Cox (F.M.).

He is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Norma Alvina (Opland), and his children and their spouses, Thomas G. Stenberg and Germaine (Arendt) of Volga, SD, Nancy E. Morrison and Edward of Auburn, AL, Scott L. Stenberg and Tawni (Myre) of Monticello, WI, and Kent A. Stenberg and Kathi (Fair) of Warrenton, MO. He is also survived by his sister Arlene Lellelid of St. Paul, MN, and his brothers, Bennett and David of Colman, SD.

Madeline (Krogstad) Winterton

Madeline Winterton, 89 of Garretson died Friday, September 26, 2014 at her home.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 A.M. Monday, September 29, 2014 at Zion Lutheran Church, Garretson. Burial will be in the South Highland Cemetery. Madeline was born May 23, 1925 to parents Oscar and Agnes (Steen) Krogstad at Dell Rapids. She grew up on a farm near Dell Rapids area and attended country school. She graduated from Lyons High School in 1943 and attended Nettleton College.

Madeline married Ordell Winterton May 2, 1948 at Willow Creek Lutheran Church, rural Dell Rapids. She lived on a farm near Sherman her entire married life.

Madeline was an active member of First Lutheran Church and WELCA in Sherman, where she held many offices and served as treasurer for several years. She was also a member of the Birthday Club, Sons of Norway, Extension Club, Garretson American Legion Auxiliary and a past member of the Norse Glee Club Auxiliary.

She enjoyed bowling, quilting and cooking for family and friends, loved having family around and very much enjoyed her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Grateful for having shared her life are her husband of 66 years, Ordell Winterton, Garretson; her children, Alice (Ray) Christensen, Sioux Falls; Beverly (Stuart) Nelson, Fountain, MN; Marilyn (Marcus) Anderson, Clearwater, MN; Gloria Winterton, Sioux Falls; Darrell (Teresa) Winterton, Garretson; Kristi (Scott) Hansen, Rochester, MN; Alan (LaDonna) Winterton, Sherman; nineteen grandchildren; nineteen great grandchildren; her sisters, Vicky Howe, Doris (Arne) Brown, Margaret (Bob) Tidemann, brothers, Ordell (Doris) Krogstad, Richard (Charlynn) Krogstad, Adrian (Marcella) Krogstad, Glen (Carol) Krogstad, numerous nieces and nephews and other relatives and friend.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother Allen Krogstad.

Erma (Mairose) Boldt

Erma (Mairose) Boldt, 98, died September 20, 2014 at the Good Samaritan Village in Sioux Falls. She was the oldest of 6 children and was born on March 5, 1916 on a farm northwest of Dell Rapids, SD to Henry and Mathilda (Heissel) Mairose. She attended rural grade school and completed her education at Dell Rapid’s St. Mary’s Catholic School. Early during the outbreak of World War II, she went to work helping the war effort by filling military commodity orders at John Morrells.

She moved to Hattiesburg, Mississippi and on February 21, 1944 she married Jake Boldt, who had been called to active military duty. She stayed with him until he was shipped overseas. She returned to South Dakota for the duration of the war and after this, they made their home in Sioux Falls.

Erma was a member of St. Joseph Cathedral and sang in the Cathedral Adult Choir for over 30 years. She also sang in the funeral choir. She participated in the Cathedral Symphony Christmas Concert a number of times.

She did volunteer work at the Good Samaritan Village Nursing Home, St. Vincent DePaul and the Center for Active Generations. She was an accomplished seamstress and used her talents to sew clothes for needy little children, donating them to the Banquet. One of her latest endeavors was making quilts and blankets for babies of underprivileged young mothers.

She was a staunch believer in the sanctity of life and supported and contributed to The National Right To Life, The American Life League and the South Dakota Right To Life.

Those remaining and remembering her life are her daughters: Gayle Angle, Vickie (Jim) Beach, Darlene (Larry) Tentinger and son, Donald (Debra) Boldt; Brother: Donald five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren; four step-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jake, brother, Jerome, sisters, Bernetta Huntimer, Doris Fellows, son-in-law, Chet Angle, and an infant sister, Lavona.

Memorials may be directed to the South Dakota Right To Life.

Laura (Nebben) Knutson

Laura C. Knutson, 91, passed away Wednesday, September 17, 2014 at Avera Dells Area Hospital. Laura was born on a farm southeast of Colman to John and Anna (Haugen) Nebben on August 10, 1923. She was baptized on October 28, 1923 and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. She attended eight grades at Gale Ridge Country School and graduated from Colman High School in 1941. She attended Nettleton Community College.

Laura was married to Morris Knutson at Colman Lutheran church on June 8, 1947. She was a long time member of Colman Lutheran Church, WELCA, and a former member of Circle Bible Study. Laura was a member of the Colman American Legion Auxiliary. She was financial secretary at the church for nine years. She was a secretary at the Van Buren and Vogt Law Firm. Laura was the executive secretary at Sioux Valley Energy Electric Association for over 36 years. Her husband preceded her on September 5, 2000. Laura was a quiet and gentle Christian lady. She enjoyed dancing with her husband, listening to good music, bowling, and golfing. Laura was hard to beat at scrabble and liked working on crossword puzzles. Her greatest joy was being with her family.

Laura is survived by two daughters, Kathleen (Randy) Keppen, Sioux Falls, Cynthia Erickson (Keven McGuire), Brandon; five grandchildren, Eric, Angela, Paula, Sarah, and Emily; nine great-grandchildren, Elizabeth, Erica, Morgen, Gustaf, Jack, Amya, Ella, Jace, and Xavier; two sisters, Hilda Johnson, Dell Rapids and Rosetta Croon, Colman; one brother, Palmer “Swede” Nebben, Colman; two sisters-in-law, Delores Nebben, Dell Rapids and Donna (Don) Broksieck, Kansas; two brothers-in-law, Don Knutson, Dell Rapids and Richard (Arlys) Knutson, Custer, SD, and many nieces and nephews. Laura was preceded by her husband Sam, her parents, three sisters, Luella Knutson, Annette Steinborn, Dorothy Plummer, and two brothers, Olaf and Arthur.

Gladys DeVaney

Gladys L. DeVaney, 95, of Dell Rapids, passed away on Saturday, September 13, 2014 at the Good Samaritan Society Sioux Falls Center. Her Funeral Service will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, September 17, 2014 at the First Baptist Church, Dell Rapids. Interment will be in the Dell Rapids Cemetery. Visitation on Tuesday, September 16, 2014 will begin at 2:00 p.m. with the family present at 6:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Gladys Lillian Sorenson was born on September 6, 1919 at Dell Rapids, SD, the daughter of Jens and Linda Sorenson. At the age of 4 years old, her father died and in 1926, Louis Flamo married Linda Sorenson and he became her caring and doting stepfather.

Gladys attended Dells Public School and graduated in 1937. She attended and graduated from Northwestern Bible College in Minneapolis, MN in 1942. She married Welford DeVaney on November 19, 1943. Their loving marriage would last 36 years before Welford’s death in 1979. Gladys was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church where she held many offices including Church Clerk for 16 years, President of ABW, both locally and Center Association, Christian Education Secretary, Diaconate, Release Time Teacher and taught Sunday School for many years.

God blessed Gladys with gifted hands-her crocheted doilies and afghans were made with much love and tender care and given to those who she loved in life. Her quilts were a work of art. She was a professional cake decorator, making anniversary cakes, wedding cakes and birthday cakes for her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, siblings, nephews, nieces and for many people in the community. Her cakes were not only beautiful but ever better to taste. Her hands also wrote poems throughout her life, often about her family. Her poems helped her to work through her grieve of her beloved husband’s death. She also wrote poems by sharing her wisdom and advice to her children and grandchildren.

Gladys broke her hip in July of 2014.

Those left to cherish her memory are her two daughters, Linda Nickles of Yankton, SD and Marla (Bill) Hassler of Sioux Falls, SD; her two grandsons who were the light of her life, Paul (Theresa) Nickles of Lee’s Summit, MO, and Joe (Robin) Nickles of Cummings, GA, her seven beautiful great-grandchildren, Joey Nickles, Brianna Nickles, Haley Nickles, Hannah Nickles, Molly Nickles, Rachel Nickles and Jacob Nickles; her sister, Elizabeth Werner of Mesa, AZ; sister-in-law, Lois Williamson of Dell Rapids and many nieces, nephews and a dear friend, Dianne Crisp of Dell Rapids.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Welford, and siblings, Rudolph Williamson, Harold Williamson, Ruth Williamson, Robert Williamson and Ralph Williamson.

Elaine Solberg, 90, of Sioux Falls and formerly of Webster, died on Monday, Sept. 8, 2014, at Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls. Her funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 11 at Fiksdal Funeral Chapel in Webster, Marion Grimes will officiate. Burial will be at Hillside Cemetery at Lily. She was born to Esther and Emer Nelson on Oct. 14, 1923. She lost her mother at the age of 7 and then helped raise her six brothers. She graduated from Lily High School in 1942. She was united in marriage to John Solberg on Nov. 8, 1941, but later divorced. She worked hard most of her life outside of the home in addition to raising eight children. She also sold her baked buns, bread, lefse and pickles. She spent the last 25 years with a special friend, Orren Bjerke.

Elaine loved to watch her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren in their school and sporting activities. She was their biggest fan and loved to cheer them on. Family gatherings were very special to Elaine. She was especially happy when family came back to South Dakota for these gatherings. Throughout the years all her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren learned to love her famous potato dumplings. Everyone had a hand in the preparation of this Norwegian tradition and many laughs were shared.

Elaine Vienna Solberg passed away at Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls on Monday, Sept. 8, 2014, surrounded by family at the age of 90 years, 10 months and 25 days.

She is survived by her eight children, Darrell (Sandy), Sioux Falls, Norman (Leslee), Talkneetna, Alaska, Dennis (Kay), Watertown, David (Brenda), Watertown, Marcia, Sioux Falls, Marilyn Hanson (Lynn), Fargo, N.D., Marcella Whyte (George), Oakdale, Minn., and Dale, Dell Rapids; 16 grandchildren, Shannon (Molly), Heather (Kent), Holly (Tim), Matthew (Alanna), Mark (Heather), Billy (Michele), Gene (Doreen), Laura (Joel), Andrea (Jeff), Leah (Dave), Ashley (Kelsey), Jared (Brittany), Eric, Jordan, Tanner and Chloe; and 18 great-grandchildren, Fisher (Shannon), Onnika (Heather), Bennett and Vaughn (Holly), Brooke, Breanna, Wesley, Carter, Branden (Matthew), Mackenzie and Kurtis (Billy), Wrigley and Wilder (Gene), Mannix, Vander and Jenacy (Laura), Ryan and Aaron (Andrea). She is also survived by brother, Wendell Nelson of California, sisters-in-law, Mona (Vernon) Nelson, Webster, Lillian (Duley) Nelson of Idaho, Mae (Landis) Nelson, Webster and Delores (Jeff) Nelson, Webster.

She was preceded in death by her parents, son Richard, brothers, Duley, Jeff, Landis, Vernon and Boyd and special friend, Orren Bjerke who passed away on Saturday, Sept. 6, 2014, in Washington.
