Cecilia (Weinacht) O’Brien

Cecilia O'BrienCecilia O’Brien, 99, of Dell Rapids, passed away on Friday, February 12, 2016 at the Dells Nursing and Rehab Center. Her Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, February 19, 2016 in St. Mary Catholic Church. Interment will be in the St. Mary Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 12:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 18, 2016. The Catholic Daughters Rosary will be prayed at 3:00 p.m. The family will be present at 5:00 p.m. with the Wake Service at 6:00 p.m. at Kahler Funeral Home. On-Line Condolences may be left at Kahler Funeral Home.

Cecilia E. Weinacht was born on May 31, 1916 at Sioux Falls, SD, the daughter of Peter and Katie (Schminnes) Weinacht. She grew up in Dell Rapids and attended St. Mary Academy graduating in 1934. She married Robert “Red” O’Brien on February 21, 1938 in Dell Rapids. They lived and farmed near Dell Rapids and then moved to a farm near Ellis in 1948. During that time she worked as a cook at O’Gorman Catholic School. In 1963 they returned to Cecilia’s home farm near Dell Rapids. Cecilia worked as a cook at St. Mary from 1965 until 1978. In 1979 they retired and moved into town. Mr. O’Brien died in 1996. Cecilia remained in her home until moving into Orchard Hills and then Dells Nursing and Rehab Center.

She was a member of St. Mary Church and Altar Society, Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Dell Rapids Hospital Auxiliary and played the organ at church and for many funerals.

She is preceded in death by her three brothers, four sisters, two infant daughters and a grandson, Jerry O’Brien.

She is survived by her sons, Robert “Bob” (Peggy) of Dell Rapids, Gerald of Harrisburg, Donald (Ann) of Warner Robins, GA; her daughters, Lois Zimmer of Sioux Falls and Vernie (Ronald) Feldhaus of Bloomington, MN; her 24 grandchildren, 71 great -grandchildren and 35 great great-grandchildren.

Lisa Marie (Fields) Rivera

Lisa Marie (Fields) Rivera passed away in her sleep on February 4, 2016.

Lisa was born to Dale and Mary Ellen Fields on May 20, 1964, in Dell Rapids, SD, and graduated from St. Mary’s High School in 1982, and from Boston University in 1987 as an occupational therapist. She married John Rivera on February 11, 2000, in Austin, TX, where she ran her own business.

She is survived by her husband, John, and her daughter, Elise; her mother, Mary Ellen Fields of Dell Rapids; her three brothers, Richard of Fortine, MT, Douglas (Linda) of Sioux Falls, SD, and Dennis (Marcella) of Golden, CO; and one sister, Kathy (George) Hansen of Littleton, CO.

She joins one sister, Colleen, one brother, Tom, and her father in heaven. Service will be in Austin at a later date.

Andrew Hinricher

Andrew HinricherAndrew J. Hinricher, 94, of Dell Rapids died Thursday, February 4, 2016 at his home. Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:30 AM Friday, February 12, 2016 at St. Mary Catholic Church, Dell Rapids. Visitation will begin at 4:00 PM Thursday with a Wake Service at 5:00 PM at the Minnehaha Funeral Home, Dell Rapids. On-Line Condolences may be left at Minnehaha Funeral Home.

Andrew was born November 15, 1921 in Granville, Iowa to parents Frank and Helen (Ricestoffer) Hinricher. As a small child he moved with his family to a farm near Colman. He entered the United States Navy in 1945 and served during World War II until his honorable discharge in 1946.

Andrew returned to Dell Rapids, where he worked for Ed Burkhart, Shorty Weiland and later for WYCO Construction.

He enjoyed putting together puzzles and playing cards with his friends. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church.

Grateful for having shared his life are a sister, Evelyn Weinacht, Dell Rapids; three brothers, Robert (Charlotte) Hinricher, Dell Rapids; Elmer (Elizabeth) Hinricher, Flandreau; Omar (Bernice) Hinricher, Colorado, numerous nieces and nephews and a special friend Loretta Thompson, Dell Rapids. 

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Norbert.

Verlynn (Henrich) Anderson

Verlynn AndersonVerlynn (Henrich) Anderson of Dell Rapids passed away peacefully at the age of 92 on February 6, 2016. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM Thursday, February 11, 2016 at St. Joseph the Workman Catholic Church, Huntimer. Burial will be in the St. Mary Catholic Cemetery, Dell Rapids. Visitation will begin at 4:00 PM Wednesday, with a Wake Service at 5:00 PM at the Minnehaha Funeral Home, Dell Rapids. On-Line Condolences may be left at Minnehaha Funeral Home.

Verlynn was born on January 28, 1924 to Fred and Elizabeth Henrich, Dell Rapids, South Dakota. She attended rural school and graduated from Dell Rapids High School in 1941.

She married Gordon Anderson on March 28, 1951 at St. Joseph the Workman Catholic Church at Huntimer. She earned a Bachelor of Science Degree from Dakota State College and continued her education earning a Master Degree from South Dakota State University.

Her professional experience included teaching two years in the Chester Elementary School and 40 years in the Dell Rapids Public School System, teaching in the Elementary School and High School. Verlynn took advanced courses from the University of South Dakota and Augustana College.

Verlynn was a Life Member of NEA, a member of St. Joseph the Workman Catholic Church where she held offices in the church Council and Women’s Guild. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters for many years. She enjoyed gardening, quilting, flowers, golf, fishing, and traveling. She loved her farm and lived there her entire life.

Grateful for having shared her life are her husband, Gordon (the love of her life) of almost 65 years, two daughters, Carolyn (Mark) Van Hoef, McMinnville, Oregon and Rita Rae (Lee) Doohen, Sioux Falls, South Dakota; five grandchildren, Dr. Abby Van Hoef, Mitchell Van Hoef, Ashley (Jake) Friemel, Kelly (Pat) Wicker and Captain Daniel (Tess) Doohen. Verlynn has three sisters, Fayola Gaspar, Lois Fischer and Donna Keller. She is preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Earl and a sister, Colleen.

Erick Gill

Erick GillErick Foster Gill, 41, passed away at his home surrounded by family and friends on Wednesday, February 3, 2016 in Sioux Falls, SD.

Erick is survived by his wife Estelle, Sioux Falls; daughter Cali, Abbeville, SC; parents Jon and Carmen Gill, Sioux Falls; brother Jon, Jr (Crystal) Gill and children Aaron and Olivia, Dell Rapids, SD; Twin sister Karin Gill-Emery (Mike) and children Sydney and Cooper, Dell Rapids, SD; as well as many aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by both maternal and paternal grandparents. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Healing Arts Program through the Avera Prairie Center Foundation.

Funeral services will be 5:00pm Sunday, February 7, 2016 at Faith Baptist Fellowship. Visitation will be Sunday, 1:00-4:00pm at Heritage Funeral Home. On-Line Condolences may be left at Heritage Funeral Home.

Verna Snoozy

Verna SnoozyVerna Snoozy, 95, of Colton, formerly of Trent, passed away on Monday, February 1, 2016 at the Good Samaritan Center in Sioux Falls. Her funeral service will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, February 8, 2016 in the United Methodist Church, Dell Rapids. Visitation with the family present will be from 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 7, 2016 in the funeral home chapel.  On-Line Condolences may be left at Kahler Funeral Home.

Verna Elizabeth Vant Hul was born on August 29, 1920 to Bert and Anna Mae Vant Hul in Flandreau, SD. She graduated from Egan High School in 1937 and was united in marriage with Virgil K. Whipkey on September 26, 1939. They farmed in the Egan and Trent areas. After Virgil’s death in 1973, she worked at H&R Block in Sioux Falls for six and half years, then as a nurse assistant at the Dell Rapids Hospital for two and half years.

Verna married Fred Snoozy on August 1, 1981 and moved to a farm in the Colton, SD area. Fred died in November of 2010. She was a volunteer at the McKennan Hospital Hospice unit for seven years. She was a member of the Trent American Baptist Women Ministries and also a member of the Colton United Methodist Church.

She is survived by three sons and one daughter, Wayne (Lin) Whipkey of Greenville, MI; Leland (Wanda) Whipkey of Sioux Falls; Marc (Berdene) Whipkey of Sioux Falls and Patricia Ann ( Gary) Brashear of Sioux Falls; seven grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren and two great great-grandchildren; Three step children, Sandrau (Tom) Swier of Sioux Falls; Floyd (Melissa) Snoozy of Colton and Deb Ford of Colton; eight step grandchildren, ten step great-grandchildren; and two step great great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Andrew and both husbands.

Memorials may be directed to the Sneaky Snoozy Memorial Fund at the Good Samaritan Center in Sioux Falls.

Peggy (Habeger) Allen

Peggy (Habeger) AllenFuneral Mass was held on Saturday, January 30, for Margaret “Peggy” Allen, 58, Gillette, Wyo., former Madison resident, who died on Jan. 26, 2016, at Madison Regional Health. The Rev. DeWayne Kayser will officiate in St. Thomas Aquinas Church at Madison, and burial will be in St. Ann Cemetery, Badus Township. On-Line Condolences may be left at Weiland Funeral Chapel.

Peggy Habeger was born on Oct. 29, 1957, at Madison. She grew up in Ramona and graduated from Ramona High School in 1975. She married Bill Allen on Oct. 31, 1975, at Madison. She lived in Madison and drove truck with her husband until moving to Gillette in 1989. She was a heavy equipment operator for the Powder River Coal Company. She returned to Madison in December 2015.

Survivors include her husband, Bill of Madison; a son, Nick of Gillette; two grandchildren; four brothers, John (Polly) Habeger of Madison, Bill (Alice) Habeger of San Diego, Calf,. Bob (Vickie) Habeger of Carmellan Bay, Calif., and Ray (Suzanne) Habeger of Dell Rapids; and a sister, Mary (Clint) Tolley of Ramona.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Jim Habeger.

Myron Lamb

Myron LambMyron G. Lamb, age 79, lifetime rural Clark farmer, died suddenly & peacefully at home on Tuesday morning, January 19, 2016. Funeral services were held on Saturday, January 23, 2016 at 2PM in the Good Hope Lutheran Church east of Clark. Burial will follow services in the Church cemetery. He was born Myron Gene Lamb on February 28, 1936 in Clark, the son of Harold Thomas and Verna Viola (Busch) Lamb. Myron attended the Kirkeby School in Merton Township through the eighth grade. He was needed on the family farm and so began his life of farming. He has lived and farmed in Merton Township since that time.

On November 6, 1955 he was united in marriage to Joyce Froke at the Good Hope Lutheran Church. Myron had been living on the farm and after his marriage, Joyce moved into the home and they have resided in the same place since that time. Over the years, he also helped his brother-in-law, Floyd Lamb on his farm as well.

Preceding him in death were his parents, a sister, Linda Hovde and a brother-in-law, Floyd Lamb.

Grateful for having shared in his life is his wife of over 60 years, Joyce, children, Harley (Joan) Lamb, Carol (David) Warkenthien all of Clark and Paula (Marshall) Drexler of Harrisburg, SD, 7 grandchildren, Christi (Jason), Tyler (Angie), Sarah (Eric), Michael, Laura (Brock), Jeff (Nichole) and Katie (Jeff), 10 great-grandchildren, Allison, Brantley, Braedon, Avery, Makenna, Carson, Kenslee, Kyle, Leighton and Aftyn. He also leaves a sister, Marilyn Lamb of Vienna, a brother, Ronald (Patti) Lamb of Clark and a brother-in-law, Larry Hovde of Dell Rapids, SD and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

Dave Peterson

David PetersonDavid (Dave) Richard Peterson passed away January 18th, 2016 at his home in Biloxi, MS after a courageous battle with cancer. A celebration of his life was held January 23, 2016 in Biloxi, MS.

David was born in Dell Rapids, SD on April 16, 1937 to Hollie and Margaret (Briley) Peterson. He graduated from Dell Rapids High School, joined the navy for 4 years, worked with Gene Marcher in his body shop until he purchased the business and it became Dells Body Shop for 20 years. He went to work for Chief Automotive Technology until his retirement.

Dave had a real passion and zest for life. Everyone he met experienced his humorous and adventurous approach to life. He loved to travel, always looking for the next adventure. His love for boating and being around the water nourished his spirit.

He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Sandra Hollida Peterson; 3 children: daughter, Nanette (Darren) Billings of Little Rock, AR; his son, Joel (Theresa) of Ft. Collins, CO; his son, Greg (Jennifer) of Tulsa OK; 5 grandchildren and 1 soon to be great grandchild. He is also survived by his brother, Robert (Lee) of Paoli, Indiana; his brother, Jack of St. Petersburg, FL; and sister, Beth (Marvin) Nelsen of Sioux Falls, SD.

Jean Hirning

Jean HirningJean Wilmarth (Reynolds) Hirning, 90, passed away Dec. 14, 2015, at Rapid City Regional Hospital Auxiliary Hospice House. She was born Sept. 28, 1925, in Lead to Harry B. and Edna (Wilmarth) Reynolds. She was educated during her primary grades in a one-room school house in Terraville, and graduated from Lead High School in 1943. She attended Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell, graduating in 1946 with Bachelor’s Degrees in English and Education.

On June 16, 1946, she was united in marriage to John Herbert Hirning at the Methodist Church in Lead. Following their marriage they made their home in Dell Rapids, until moving to Rapid City in 1953.

She is survived by her six children: two sons, John C. of Rapid City and David of Black Hawk; four daughters, Robin Peterson and her friend, Dan Gerg, of Eugene, OR, Bonnie Kroeger of Rapid City, Mary Taylor and her husband, Kim, of Black Hawk, and Sally Tate and her husband, Anthony, of Santa Ana, CA; nine grandchildren: Richard Kroeger, Kevin Peterson, Ryan Peterson, Christy Land, Kara Taylor, Christopher Taylor, Jonathan Tate, AnnMarie Tate, and Emily Tate; and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, John; her parents; two sisters, Helen Tysell and Ruth M. Reynolds; son-in-law, Daryl Peterson; and David’s longtime companion, Paula Kirchgasler.

Services were held on Saturday, Dec. 19, at the First United Methodist Church in Rapid City with the Rev. Greg Kroger officiating. Private inurnment services will be at a later date at Pine Lawn Memorial Park. On-Line Condolences may be left at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be designated for the First United Methodist Church, an endowed scholarship fund at Dakota Wesleyan University, or Hospice of the Hills.
