Sophia Hillesheim-Kral

Sophia Hillesheim-Kral, age 101, of Sleepy Eye, MN passed away at Divine Providence Community Home lovingly surrounded by her family on May 22, 2016. Visitation will be at Sturm Funeral Home in Sleepy Eye on Wednesday May 25th from 4:00 – 8:00 pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at the Church of St Mary in Sleepy Eye on Thursday, May 26th at 11:00 a.m. Interment in St. Mary Catholic Cemetery immediately following services. Sophia was born in New York, New York on April 22, 1915 as Sophia Kaminsky, the daughter of William and Maria Kaminsky. On October 9, 1915, Maria relinquished six month old Sophia to the New York Foundling Hospital orphanage in Manhattan. Sophia was one of 250,000 children shipped from the East Coast to families in the West on one of the infamous “orphan trains.” Two-year-old Sophia Kamin arrived in St Paul /Minneapolis, MN. in 1917 and was taken in by a family. In 1919, Sophia was replaced to Springfield, MN. Scarcely before Sophia’s eighteenth birthday, she was legally adopted by Mrs. Anna (Joseph) Greim and became Sophia Greim. Sophia grew up in Springfield and attended St Raphael and Springfield Public schools.

On June 4, 1936, Sophia Greim married Charles E. Hillesheim, son of Meinrad and Bertha (Wiltscheck) Hillesheim of Stark / Siegel Township, Sleepy Eye, MN, at St Raphael’s Catholic Church, Springfield, MN. After living in Springfield for many years, the couple moved to Sleepy Eye. Charles preceded Sophia in death on August 24, 1966. On February 16, 1985, Sophia married widower, Raymond O. Kral at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye. Raymond preceded Sophia in death on August 26, 2007.

Sophia worked at Anthony’s Department Store and the Orchid Inn and Supper Club. She had a very strong love for her family and the people that touched her life. She often expressed, “Deepest gratitude fills my heart when I think of God’s great goodness to me and the countless persons whose lives have touched mine and helped me to grow.” Her legacy of kindness and her humble loving spirit a gift to many. She will be greatly missed by her family and many friends.

Sophia is survived by her children, Patricia (Henry) Brandel of Atwater, MN.; Charlene (Gil) Peichel of Dell Rapids, S.D.; Johnora “Jonni” (Lon) DeGregoris of Gilbert, AZ.; Stephen (Lois) Hillesheim of Sleepy Eye, MN.; and Renée (Lonnie) Wendinger of Sleepy Eye, MN.; 13 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, and 16 great-great-grandchildren.

Sophia is also survived by step children, Phyllis (Frederick) Juni of New Ulm, MN. Linus (Janet) Kral, Ray (Susan) Kral Jr., and the late Marvin (Eileen) Kral of Sleepy Eye, MN., and many step-grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; surrogate brother, Norbert Ochs, Walker, MN., surrogate daughter, Dorothy (Crouter) Glynn, Casper, WY., brother in-laws Meinrad Hillesheim Jr., Arthur Sellner, Sleepy Eye, MN., and sister-in-law Evelyn Forstner, New Ulm, MN.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Divine Providence landscaping project or individual choice.

Urma Headrick

Urma Mae Headrick of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, passed away on Saturday, May 21, 2016 at the home of her son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Anne Headrick in Afton, MN. Her Funeral Service will begin at 1:00 PM on Tuesday, May 24 in West Nidaros Lutheran Church, rural Baltic. Visitation with family present will be on hour prior to the start of the service. Urma Mae Headrick was born on the farm of her grandparents, the Ordals, in Colton in 1927. She lived with her parents, Amanda and Wilhelm Sando and four brothers on their farm near Colton. She attended Huntimer School and graduated from Colton High School in 1946. One of her first jobs was as a ‘soda jerk’ at the drug store in Colton. She made malts, shakes and sundaes. Ice cream was always her favorite treat. She received her teaching certificate from The Madison Normal School in 1946 and taught in Grimsbach School in Colton. Urma and her friends wrote letters to servicemen during the war. There is a photograph of her and her pals in front of the Colton Post Office that was published in several local papers.

Urma met her husband, George at the Arkota Ballroom in Sioux Falls in 1946. He was from Pittsburg, PA. They were married a year later. After he enlisted in the Navy, Urma moved with him to naval bases around the country. They lived in California, Hawaii, Connecticut,Tennessee, California, and Florida. She made new homes in each place and cared for her four children. She also worked outside the home at local department stores. She was promoted to the manager’s position in every job she had. After George retired from the Navy, they returned to Sioux Falls, where he completed his degree at Augustana College. They moved to Arizona where she worked at Motorola from 1972-1992. She proudly retired after winning many awards for her work.

She returned to Sioux Falls, as a widow in 1992 and enjoyed spending more time with her family there and in Colton. She took care of her aging mother until she died in 2005 at the age of 107. Urma enjoyed her life. She loved to garden and feed the birds. She quilted and crocheted and always had many craft projects to do.

Urma was especially proud of her Lutheran heritage. Her Grandfather O. O. Sando founded over 17 churches as a traveling minister. His last church was the West Nidaros Lutheran Church. A fitting place for the celebration of her full and adventurous life.

She was devoted to her family and loved her cats. The family would like to thank you all for your love and support now and throughout the last few difficult years. She will be be missed deeply by all whose lives she touched.

Grateful for having shared her life are her children, Donna Moore (Charlie), Blaine TN, Larry Headrick (Anne), Afton, MN, Barbara Headrick, South Deerfield, MA, and Diana Swier (Howard), Baltic, SD, her brothers Alverdo and Orllo Sando, 12 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Amanda and Wilhelm W. Sando, her husband, Henry (George) Headrick Jr, brothers Merton and Delmar Sando, and her sisters-in-law Roberta, Emily, Jean, and Nila Sando.

Irene LaFave

Irene “Soogie” LaFave, 77, of Onida, died Tuesday, May 17, at the Oahe Manor in Gettysburg. Services will be 10:00am, Monday, May 23 at the Onida United Methodist Church with visitation one hour prior to services. Burial will take place at the Onida Cemetery. Irene Mae McChristy was born March 11, 1939 in Yankton County, SD to Everett and Christine “Babe” McChristy. She graduated from Irene High School in 1957. After high school, she attended the School of Practical Nursing in Pierre, becoming a Licensed Practical Nurse in 1958.

She was united in marriage with Lonnie LaFave on June 4, 1961 at Salem Lutheran Church in Irene, SD. To this union four children were born: Alan, Steven, Amy and Linda. They lived in Pierre until February 1, 1965, when Lonnie and Irene opened LaFave Electric in Onida. Irene was the bookkeeper and tended the shop when Lonnie was out on calls. They retired in 2007. Irene was a member of the Onida Methodist Church.

Irene was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 1979. She became a resident of Oahe Manor in Gettysburg in 2012. Despite her health issues her faith never wavered and she always had a smile on her face. Besides Lonnie, Irene’s children and grandchildren were the center of her world.

Grateful for having shared in her life are her children: Alan (Kari) of Aberdeen and their children Ashley and Alexis, son Steven (Lori) of Mission Hill and their children Nicholas, Matthew and Thomas, and daughter Amy (Mark) McGee of Dell Rapids; sister Myrtle Jackson, brother-in-law Dennis (Lorna) LaFave, sister-in-law Belva (Clovis) Wood, and brother-in-law Eldon (Lilia) LaFave; nieces and nephews, Joan Jackson, Kent Jackson, Dawn (Shane) Bonham, Janelle (Eddy) Coker, Lynne LaFave, Marty LaFave, Les LaFave, Dawn LaFave, and Corey (Susan) LaFave.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lonnie, daughter, Linda, parents, Everett and Christine McChristy, brother-in-law Duane Jackson, father and mother-in-law, Eugene and Olinda LaFave, brother-in-law Wayne and Dianne LaFave, and niece Michelle LaFave.

Robert Olund

Ardella Mae Wolles

Rick Craig

Rick Craig, 42, of Trent, SD passed from this world at 11:05 a.m. on Saturday, May 14, 2016 at Sanford Health surrounded by family. His Celebration of Life Service will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 21, 2016 at Quarry Rock Church, Dell Rapids. Visitation will be one hour prior to the start of the service. Rick Lee Craig was born on January 1, 1974 at Norfolk, NE, the son of Randy and Barb (Jakobosky) Craig. He grew up in Norfolk, NE and attended school in Norfolk. He graduated high school in 1992. He owned his own business “ExperTint.” It started as a mobile tinting and car stereo installment and then grew. He owned his business for six years. He moved to Trent, SD to be closer to family. He was a contractor with Mobile Works and enjoyed working with John. He was on the Norfolk, NE and Trent, SD Volunteer Fire Department. He enjoyed it, but had to give it up because of back problems. He loved to run. He worked with the Life Leadership Development. After high school, Rick continued to learn. He loved educating his mind and helping others learn. He is a very loving, caring, son; brother; uncle; and friend to many.

He is an active member of Quarry Rock Church. Rick is known for his sense of humor, his faith, his honesty, his dedication, his love for family and friends, and his love for music and singing and rejoicing in our Lord. Rick may be gone from this world, but his legacy and friendships will still be alive and remembered. He has a special bond with all his nephews and nieces. He is Godfather to Addysen (whom they had a special bond only the two of them understood, we knew it but he admitted it and said no one could take that away). Godfather also to Keller Pohlman (Jodi and Darren Pohlman). He has touched and influenced thousands of lives before, during, and now after the illness and his death. His new life begins with our Lord and Savior, which he was so ready to be with.

Those left to cherish his memories are his parents, Randy and Barb Craig of Trent; his brother, Brian (Kathy) Craig and nephew, Chad Craig and niece, Delany Craig of Omaha, NE; his sister, Tracy (Jim) Jensen and nieces, Hannah and Addysen Jensen of Trent; his best friend and brother from another mother, Milt (Maddie) Borah “The two Amigos” of Beaver Creek, MN; and many, many friends and family that he has touched throughout his life! He has been a great listener and above all mentor. Now he will be a mentor in Heaven. Rick was always good a being a public speaker. Now he will have an even bigger audience. He is preceded in death by his grandparents, Alvin and Mildred Craig; aunt, Susan Rocker; cousin, Scott Roker, aunt, Ginger Mead and his dog, Maxie.

Maedora Hoff

Maedora Hoff, 78, passed away on Thursday, April 28, 2016, at the Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls, SD. Funeral services will begin at 10:00 a.m. Monday, May 2 at Canton Lutheran Church. Maedora Lenora Hoff was born March 20, 1938 to Theodore and Lenora (Pietz) Krueger in Tripp, SD. Maedora graduated from Tripp High School and attended Wartburg and Augustana Colleges. She married Harlan Hoff on August 21, 1960 in Tripp, SD. The couple moved to Dell Rapids, SD then to Canton, SD where they lived for the next 50 years and raised their three children. Throughout those years, Maedora worked at the Souvignier Sales Barn and Farmers State Bank.

Maedora found great joy in supporting and attending her children’s and grandchildren’s activities. She was also known for her love of shopping with her family. Maedora participated in Pallathene and volunteered at the Avera Heart Hospital in her retirement.

Grateful for sharing her life are loving husband of over 55 years Harlan Hoff; children: Sherry Larson (Tom Schmidt) of Sioux Falls, SD; Steve Hoff (Jeanne) of Dell Rapids, SD; and Sheila Etrheim (John) of Sioux Falls, SD; grandchildren: Tyler Larson (Lindsey Kuehl), Bryant Larson (Chandra), Garrett Hoff, Corynn Hoff, Shaylee Hoff, Brody Etrheim, Megan Etrheim, Elise Etrheim, and Griffin Etrheim; sister Sandra Hauser of Lafayette, IN; and many other family and friends. Maedora was preceded in death by her parents; niece, Barbara Hauser; nephew, Jimmy Hauser; brother-in-law, Garry Hauser; and sister-in-law, LuAnn Hoff.

Judy (Shefte) Van Dam

Judy Lynn Van Dam, 57, of Montrose, lost her short but courageous battle with pancreatic cancer on April 15, 2016 at Avera McKennan Hospital. Funeral mass was held on Friday, April 22, 2016 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Montrose. On-line condolences may be left at Kinzley Funeral Home.

Judy Shefte was born August 18, 1958 to Kenneth and Delores (Quam) Shefte in Dell Rapids, SD. She grew up on a farm near Dell Rapids and moved to town where she worked with her family at the Shefte Cafe in Junior High. She attended and graduated from Dell Rapids Public School.

On June 16, 1978, Judy married her best friend Floyde Van Dam in Dell Rapids. Floyde and Judy were blessed with two daughters and nearly 38 years of marriage. She was employed at Canistota Good Samaritan for the last 14 years as of April 8, 2016.

Judy is known for her caring heart, kindness and patience. She was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and St. Patrick’s Altar Society, where she served as Vice President and currently President. She enjoyed gardening, canning, baking, sewing, and doing crafts. Judy also loved spending time with her 3 grandsons outside, in the garden, and baking.

She is survived by: her husband, Floyde of Montrose; two daughters, Jill (Dan) McMurtrey of Winner and Stacy Van Dam of Overland Park, KS; three grandchildren, Hayden, Clay, and Ethan McMurtrey; mother, Delores Shefte of Dell Rapids; brothers and sisters, Karen (Dean) Skatvold, Bonnie Ahlers, Gail (Mark) Gannon, Jean (Mike) Bauman, Stuart (Kim) Shefte, and Kevin (Laura) Shefte; mother-in-law, JoAnn Van Dam; and 20 nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father, Kenneth Shefte, brother-in-law, Frank Ahlers, father-in-law, Nick Van Dam, and several aunts and uncles. In lieu of flowers, the family would prefer to make a contribution in memory of Judy to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network to assist other families facing this devastating disease

David Sommerfeld

David A. Sommerfeld, 75, of Dell Rapids died Tuesday, April 19, 2016 at the Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls. Funeral services will begin at 10:30 AM Saturday, April 23, 2016 at the Lutheran Church of Dell Rapids. Burial with Military Rites will be in the Dell Rapids Cemetery. Visitation with the family present will be from 5-7:00 PM Friday at the Minnehaha Funeral Home, Dell Rapids. On-line condolences may be left at Minnehaha Funeral Home.

David Arthur Sommerfeld was born October 31, 1940 in Clarkfield, Minnesota, to Arthur and Adeline (Hartfiel) Sommerfeld. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. He graduated from Boyd High School, Boyd, Minnesota in 1958. He worked as a part time teller & part time janitor at State Bank in Boyd, Minnesota, drafted into the US Army in 1963, honorably discharged in 1965. He then worked at Northwestern National Bank in Dawson before transferring to Northwestern National Bank in Sioux Falls in 1969, and to the Dell Rapids branch in 1974. He was Loan Officer, Assistant Manager & Manager before transferring to Credit Review in Sioux Falls in 1995, and worked there until his retirement in 2003. In 2005 he reentered the workforce at Metabank in Sioux Falls for 3 years.

He met Margo Sorensen while working at Northwestern National Bank in Sioux Falls in 1969, and they were married June 6, 1970. They lived in Sioux Falls for 4 years before making their permanent home in Dell Rapids.

David was a member of the Dell Rapids Ambulance Service for 20 years, served on the Dell Rapids City Council for 17 years, Optimist Club, Lions Club, Ducks Unlimited and Lutheran Church of Dell Rapids.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing and traveling with his family and friends. But his number one passion was anything to do with his grandchildren and tried to never miss one of their events.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife of 46 years, Margo, son, Nathan & wife Sarah, & Children Bryce & Leah, of Dell Rapids, son Mathew & wife Shelly & children Chase & Kayla, of Tea. A Sister, Opal & Husband Don Lynne of Bloomington, Minnesota, Mother-in-Law, Phyllis Sorensen of White Lake, Sister-in-law Kris Kieffer & husband John of White Lake, and many nieces & nephews and friends.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Art & Adeline Sommerfeld, his niece, Michelle Lynne, Father-in-law, Anker Sorensen, His special friends, Margo’s Grandparents, Ted & Doris Scott.
