Lois Williamson

Lois M. Williamson, 98, of Dell Rapids, passed away on Thursday, February 28, 2019 at the Dells Nursing and Rehab Center. Her funeral service is at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, March 4, 2019 in the Dell Rapids United Methodist Church. Interment is in the Dell Rapids Cemetery. Visitation with the family present is from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 3, 2019 at Kahler Funeral Home.

Lois M. Meyer was born on November 26, 1920 on a farm near Pipestone, MN, the daughter of WM and Dorothy Meyer. When she was four she moved with her parents to a farm near Trent, SD where she grew up and attended rural school.

She married Robert B. Williamson on August 18, 1945 at Augustana Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls. She worked as a telephone operator and later at the Dell Rapids Community Hospital in the Dietary Department for 23 years.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Dell Rapids and the United Methodist Women and the Dell Rapids Senior Citizens.

She is preceded in death by her husband, parents, her brothers, Vernon and Bill and sister, Doris.

Lois is survived by her two sons, Robert Jr. (Cindy) of Watertown and Darrell (Cathie) of Crooks; nine grandchildren and her great grandchildren.

Eugene Baumberger

Eugene “Geno” J. Baumberger, 79, of Dell Rapids, passed away on Tuesday, February 26, 2019 at the Dougherty Hospice House. His Mass of Christian Burial is at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 2, 2019 in St. Mary Catholic Church, Dell Rapids. Interment is in the St. Mary Cemetery, Dell Rapids. Visitation with the family present is from 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. on Friday, March 1, 2019 in St. Mary Catholic Church and the Christian Wake Service is at 7:00 p.m. Funeral arrangements are under the care of Kahler Fuenral Home.

Geno was born on June 6, 1939, in Chester, SD to Marcus and Catherine (Geraets) Baumberger. Following the loss of his mother to cancer at the age of 15, he helped his father run the family farm and raise his younger siblings. He married LaVonne Burgers on November 16, 1961. Geno spent most of his working life in the construction industry.

Anyone who ever met Geno never forgot him. He was a ‘larger than life’ character, a true old-school gentleman with a genuine love of life, and a perfectionist in every sense of the word. He will be remembered for his outspoken ways; he was known for telling it like it was without holding back. He had a knack for being able to fix anything; if there was ever a question about something mechanical or construction-related, Geno was the guy to ask.He was a firm believer that anything worth doing was worth doing well, and never accepted less.

His children have fond memories of growing up in Geno and Vonnie’s household. Rides to church on Sunday were usually accompanied by all five of them in the back seat yelling ‘FLOOR IT DAD!!’… of course Geno was more than willing to do just that. His greatest joy in life was watching them grow up and become successful in their chosen fields. His love for his grandchildren was second to none.

He was preceded in death by his parents, as well as his brother Mike and sister Ginny.

He is survived by his wife LaVonne; children; Gina (Glenn) Briggs of Cat Spring, TX, Wade (Bonnie) of Northfield, MN, Tony (Shelly) of Colman, Ginger (Brad) Tieszen of Sioux Falls, and Grant (Stacy) of Northfield, MN. He was a proud grandpa of 13 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He also survived by his four brothers, three sisters, his extended family and many friends.

John Van Liere

John Van Liere, age 92, of Dell Rapids, SD, formerly of Colton passed away Thursday, February 21, 2019 at the Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls, SD surrounded by his family. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 on Wednesday, February 27, 2019 at First Reformed Church in Colton, SD. Burial will be held at the Colton Cemetery with Military Honors. Visitation will be from 5:00-7:00pm on Tuesday February 26 at the Minnehaha Funeral Chapel in Colton, SD.

John Marvin Van Liere was born on April 11, 1926 in Chester, SD to Pete and Dena (Van Hunnik) Van Liere. He attended grade school and graduated from Colton High School in 1945. After graduation, John worked at John Morrell and Company and helped on the farm before being drafted into the Army for WWII. After 2 years of service in occupied Japan, John returned home and soon after married Esther Harmelink on April 2, 1948. John and Esther began farming south of Colton and eventually moved northwest of Colton where they retired from farming in 1990. After retirement, John and Esther built a home in Colton and spent their winters in Apache Junction, AZ. In 2018, John and Esther sold their home and moved to Orchard Hills in Dell Rapids, SD.

John was a lifetime member of First Reformed Church of Colton and served in many positions for the church over the years. He was also a long-time member of the American Legion and Lion’s Club. John and Esther enjoyed square dancing, playing cards, going to auctions, traveling and spending time with family and friends. John especially loved sports and was a strong competitor in many activities. However, he found his niche in Hand Corn Husking where he became “the man to beat” in the South Dakota state competitions for many years and represented South Dakota at the National Corn Husking Contest repeatedly, winning the National Corn Husking Open Division in 1995. John participated in the Senior Games for over 30 years and in 2005 was inducted into the South Dakota Senior Games Hall of Fame.

John was also quite a celebrity in his own ranks. He was a contestant on the Price is Right in 1988, where he made it to the final show case show down. John was interviewed countless times for local news special interest stories. He starred in an episode of the nationally syndicated cooking show Glutton for Punishment, highlighting John’s corn husking skills and Esther’s corn related recipes. John once posed for the cover of Farm Journal magazine and his WWII biography was published in Greg Latza’s book, “Blue Stars”.

Grateful for sharing his life are his wife of 70 years, Esther; daughter, Nancy (Greg) Meyer of Wentworth, SD; six sons, David (Jayne) of Huntington, IN, Larry of Sioux Falls, SD, Tom of Chester, SD, Jay of Wentworth, SD, Don (Celeste) of Phoenix, AZ and Bob (Joan) of Wentworth, SD; seventeen grandchildren and thirty one great-grandchildren; sister, Julie Swier of Dell Rapids, SD; brothers, Lowell (June) Van Liere of Hartford, SD and Roy (Elaine) Van Liere of Colton, SD; sisters-in-law, Helen Van Liere of Sioux Falls and Irene Richardson of Vermillion, SD.

John was preceded in death by his parents, Pete and Dena Van Liere; brothers, Melvin and Adrian and his wife, Jeanette; brothers-in-law, Gerret Swier and Ronald Richardson and sister-in-law, Catherine (Cash) Swier and her husband, Rich.

Phyllis Ollerich

Phyllis Alice Ollerich, 89, of Dell Rapids was an angel on earth and became an angel in heaven on February 14, 2019. She was born on Dec. 22, 1929 to James Walsh Jr. and Genevieve Haley Walsh. She attended Welby Grade School, Yankton High School, and Nettleton College. She worked for Midwest Beach Printing Co., secretary for Raven Industry, School of Nursing, and a bookkeeper for Sioux Falls Livestock Co and Ollerich Cattle Co.

Phyllis met Bob Ollerich at the Arkota Ballroom. They were married on April 27, 1954. They ranched at Summit, SD, as well as farmed in Tea and Garretson. Her life was filled with 8 children that kept her busy. Fascination engulfed her at how quickly the kids grew. No matter how hard they tried they couldn’t get away with anything; she always knew who was climbing the stairs in the wee hours of the morning.

Phyllis’s life goal was to be a disciple for God. She attended St. Rose of Lima Church in Garretson, SD where she was a member of the Catholic Daughters, taught CCD, and was President of the Altar Society. She enjoyed talking with the congregation and serving coffee and goodies after mass on Sundays. She thrived on the opportunity to help another person and make a difference.

As the kids got older she traveled often and appreciated a good restaurant. The grandchildren soon arrived, and when they could sit up, she taught them to make cookies; chocolate chip and snicker doodles were the favorites. She spent many years serving as a 4-H leader. Of course we can’t forget her favorite show: Days of Our Lives. She never missed an episode since the day it started. She also enjoyed bowling and beating everyone at cards (King’s corner and solitaire were her favorites). Our mom was a quiet observer, but if you caught her at the right moment you could catch her sticking out her tongue or making a funny comment.

She is survived by husband Robert Ollerich, 8 children, Steve and Rhonda Ollerich of Dell Rapids, Tim and Vickie Ollerich of Heron Lake, MN, Beth and Kenny Jessen of Bushnell, SD, Nancy and Dallas Deranleau of Rapid City, SD, Tom Ollerich of Hartford, SD, Joleen Ollerich and Dave Ziebarth of Rapid City, SD, Lori Mittan of Craig, CO, and Brian and Lynnette Ollerich of Summit, SD. Along with 17 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, and 1 great- great grandchild and her sister, Janet Waggoner of Yankton.

Phyllis will join her mom and dad, brothers Larry, Merle, and Ralph, and her sister Carol Kay, along with her granddaughter Brooke in heaven.

Mass of Christian Burial for Phyllis is at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, February 18, 2019 in St. Mary Catholic Church, Dell Rapids. Interment is in the Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Lennox. Visitation with the family present is on Sunday, February 17, 2019 at Kahler Funeral Home from 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. The Christian Wake Service i at 4:00 p.m. followed by the Rosary.

Arliss Lickteig

Arliss M. Lickteig, 83, of Dell Rapids, passed away on Friday, February 1, 2019 at the Dells Nursing and Rehab Center. Her Mass of Christian Burial is at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday February 7, 2019 in St. Mary Catholic Church, Dell Rapids with Fr. John Lantsberger as the celebrant. Interment is in the St. Mary Cemetery. Casketbearers are Nate Lickteig, Dustin Lickteig, Nick Lickteig, Trevor Lickteig, Matt Keller, Joe Matzke and Caleb Hoekstra. Visitation is at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 6, 2019 at Kahler Funeral Home. The family will be present from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m with the Christian Wake Service at 7:00 p.m.

Arliss Westwick was born on August 30, 1935 at Dell Rapids, SD, the daughter of Norris and Lillian (Thill) Westwick. She moved with her family to Mason City, IA until the second grade when they moved to Lake Preston, SD. The family moved back to Dell Rapids just before she started the fifth grade. She attended St. Mary School and graduated in 1953. She worked at Smokey’s until she met Florian Lickteig. The couple married on June 14, 1954 at St. Mary Catholic Church. The couple moved to Rapid City, SD before returning to Dell Rapids to raise their children. Arliss worked at the Dells Cafe, Dakota Industries and T and C’s until her retirement in the late 90’s. Florian died on April 16, 2007. Arliss remained in her home where she enjoyed many years with her four legged companion, Toby. She moved to Dells Nursing and Rehab in 2017.

Arliss was a member of St. Mary Parish and altar society, and the birthday club for over 56 years. She enjoyed Bingo, special occasions with her family and her grandkids sporting events.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Florian; daughter, Jeannine; an infant sister, Helen Margaret and her parents.

She is survived by her children, Craig (Sandy) of Sioux Falls, Arlen “Moe” (Grace) of Dell Rapids, Stuart of Grand Forks, ND and Jon (Ann) of Volga; her grandchildren, Nate (Megan), Megan, Stacey (Joe), Jen (Matt), Whitney (Caleb), Dustin, Nick (Abbie), Trevor (Taylor) and Sydney; her 11 great-grandchildren; her brother, Joe Westwick of FL and her nieces, nephews and many friends and extended family.

Gerald Heinemann

It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our father, Gerald Cleophus Heinemann of Dell Rapids at the age of 82. He passed away early Wednesday morning, January 30^th, 2019 during the coldest temperatures we’ve had in years.

Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:00 AM Saturday, February 2, 2019 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Dell Rapids. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation with the family present from 5:00 to 7:00 PM followed by a Wake Service at 7:00 PM Friday, February 1, 2019 at St. Mary Catholic Church.

Gerald (Jerry) Cleophus was born on May 7th, 1936 in Dell Rapids, to Agnus and Norbert Heinemann. He was raised and attended school in Dell Rapids, graduating from St. Mary High School. It was always interesting growing up in a house with one brother and eight sisters.

At the age of 22 while serving our country in Japan, Jerry was called back home due to his father’s ill health. After his father’s passing, he took the responsibility of tending to the farm and helping his mother and siblings. He was a very humble, busy and hardworking man. Little did he know just how busy life could get.

Jerry met Joan Jarman on the dance floor at the Arkota Dance Hall in Sioux Falls and they married on August 22^nd, 1959. They both spoke of many sweet memories they made spending weekends with each other and friends dancing at the Arkota and Pavillion. Soon after marriage, Jerry and Joan moved out to the Heinemann farm where they always dreamt of creating a big family. They had six busy children; four sons and two daughters and after that came eighteen grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Jerry worked on the farm and drove truck for Hyman Freightways, Inc. for 25 years, retiring at the age of 62. He was a member of the St. Mary Catholic Church all of his life. There was nothing Jerry treasured more than a fresh cup of coffee and good conversation with family and friends. He showed us all the meaning of hard work and the importance of family. Among his many titles, he was a great son, brother, husband, father and grandfather.

Jerry is survived by his children, Mike (DeAnn) Heinemann, Flandreau, Craig (Tonya) Heinemann, Dell Rapids, Larry (Shelley) Heinemann, Dell Rapids, Steve (Kris) Heinemann, Dell Rapids and Kristi (Brad) Nieman, Sioux Falls; eighteen grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; four sisters, Ethel (Alan) Ketteleger, Oklahoma, Evelyn (Gene) Gannon, Iowa, Janice (Jerry) Kritzer, Nevada and Arlene (Russ) McFarlene, Sioux Falls, SD; numerous nieces and nephews; many relatives and friends.

Jerry was preceded in death by his wife, Joan Irene (Jarman) Heinemann; daughter, Kathleen Heinemann; parents, Norbert and Agnus Heinemann; five sisters, Kay, Shirley, Mary and Viviene and one brother, Bob.

Constance Opland

Constance “Connie” Elida Opland August 16, 1921-January 29, 2019

Flowers……When we think of mom we think of flowers.

Mom’s outward smile reflected the inner beauty that she carried with her as a Child of God. The love of the Lord shown through in all that she did and was. She greeted with a smile and cheerful word. She blessed others by bringing bouquets of flowers to church every Sunday from early spring until late fall. Mom recognized those in need of being uplifted or those hurting and she offered to them what God gave to her in the form of smiles, laughter, a kind word and flowers.

Mom, in over a 60 year marriage with dad, Bennett Opland, raised six children on a dairy farm in a caring, warm and loving environment. She spent most of her time either in the garden or in the kitchen. She had an open door policy and nobody left hungry. She multiplied and extended that same love to her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, friends, neighbors, family and those strangers that quickly became friends. She taught each of us to appreciate the sunrise and sunset of each day that painted a unique picture of God’s love for each of His children.

Aside from tending to business on the farm and raising kids, mom was on the road selling Fuller Brush and Watkins. She was a familiar face on the door steps of folks in the Colton area offering them the service of bringing their cleaning and cooking supplies directly to their doors. Mom and dad took bus tours where they entertained the folks with their shenanigans. Mom was always active in church teaching Sunday school, adult classes, sewing quilts and serving as the first female president of the Willow Creek Congregation to name a few. Mom loved being part of the local Garden Club and Senior Center and was never afraid to take on a leadership role or being the Master of Ceremonies. Her most important role, however, was sharing the Gospel in word and service to others.

Constance Elida Opland, daughter of ConRoy and Elfrida (Erickson) Langloss, after 97 years of life left this world behind and went to her forever Home in Glory on January 29, 2019 at the Dells Nursing and Rehab Center. In her final minutes on this earth, her eyes held the promise of greater things to come.

Preceding mom to Glory and anxiously awaiting to greet her were her parents, ConRoy and Elfrida; husband, Bennett; three brothers, Omar, Kenneth and Leonard; grandsons, Heath and Aaron Opland and granddaughter, Jamie Fox.

Connie leaves behind on earth her six children, Bernie Clare (fiancé, Bonnie Pinnerud) Opland, Milton Norman (Pamela) Opland, Bonnie June (Raymon) Sondergaard, Roseanne Kay Ruff, Trudy Celeste (Randy) Hartman and Judy Ray (fiancé, Brett Traphagen) Fox; twelve grandchildren; thirty great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services and Celebration of her Life will begin at 2:00 PM Saturday, February 2, 2019 at Willow Creek Lutheran Church, rural Dell Rapids. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 PM Friday, February 1, 2019 at the church.

Mary “Maxine” Busch

Mary “Maxine” Busch, 96, of Dell Rapids, passed away on Monday, January 28, 2019 at the Dells Nursing and Rehab Center. In honoring Maxine’s wishes, there will be a memorial service held early this spring. Funeral arrangements are under the care of Kahler Funeral Home, Dell Rapids.

Mary Maxine Myers was born on August 1, 1922 at home in DeSmet, SD, the daughter of Ilo Paul “Ted” and Mary Alice (Johns) Myers. On March 24, 1926 she was joined by a baby brother, Lloyd Paul Myers. She grew up and attended school in DeSmet, graduating from DeSmet High School in May of 1941. After high school, Maxine moved to Huntington Park, CA and worked at the Defense Plants. In 1945, she met Bill Busch on a trip back to South Dakota to visit family. Maxine was married to Bill Busch on a hot day in LasCruces, New Mexico on August 26, 1946 while he was stationed in the Army. After his discharge the couple moved back to South Dakota to try farming. In 1950, the couple moved back to California where Bill started employment at Kaiser Steel. They made their home in Fontana, CA for 32 years. Prior to that they lived in Downey, CA for nine years. After their retirement, the couple moved to Dell Rapids, SD in May of 1992.

They moved to Orchard Hills in June of 2009. On December 7, 2009 Bill died.

She is preceded in death by her loving parents, her brother, Lloyd (Jill Ryland) and her husband, Bill Busch of 63 years.

She is survived by her nieces and nephews, Kaye Myers of Brookings, SD; Mary Myers (Bill Read) of Milwaukee, WI, Stan (Annette) Myers of DeSmet, SD and Scott Myers of DeSmet, SD.

Memorials and condolences can be sent to the funeral home and will be forwarded to the family.

Kathleen Larson

Kathleen V. Larson went home to her God and Savior on Monday, January 21, 2019. Her Funeral service will be held in the Chester United Methodist Church at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 26, 2019. There is visitation for two hours prior to the service. Funeral arrangements are under the care of Kahler Funeral Home, Dell Rapids.

Kathy was born February 6, 1948 to Duane A. and Vivian M. (Jensen) Larson in Chester, SD. She graduated from Chester High School in 1966. She attended Augustana College, Sioux Falls College, and then, Nettleton,graduating in 1970 as a stenographer. After school, Kathy lived and worked in Sioux Falls and was a long-time volunteer at First United Methodist Church. She served in the Delker Memorial Library in Chester during its Saturday hours for a number of years, sharing her love of reading with children and adults alike.

Kathy was well versed in scripture and history. She found great joy in gospel music and often sang for church services. Kathy loved her family and looked forward to the reunion with her parents and loved ones who had gone on before. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Sioux Falls and the Chester United Methodist Church, the Jubilant Singers, and the Chester American Legion Auxiliary.

Kathy leaves behind extended family and many friends across the country.

Norma Stenberg

Norma’s funeral service is at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, January 28, 2019 in the Lutheran Church of Dell Rapids Chapel with the Rev. Eldon Thurow officiating. Interment is in the Colman Cemetery. Visitation with the family present is from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 27, 2019 at Kahler Funeral Home, Dell Rapids.

Norma Alvina Stenberg was born to Carl and Pearl (Sundal) Opland on January 30, 1927 in Madison, SD. She passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 22, 2019 at United Living Community in Brookings, SD. She was 91 years old.

Norma lived on several farms while growing up in the Colton, Flandreau, and Dell Rapids communities. She graduated from Egan High School and married her husband of 68 years, Virgil Stenberg on December 24, 1945. They lived on a farm near Colman, SD, moved to Everett, WA for a few years and returned to settle on a farm near Lake Campbell (Volga, SD). In retirement they lived on a farm near Flandreau and then moved to Dell Rapids. They were members of Lake Campbell Lutheran Church, Flandreau Lutheran Church and the Lutheran Church of Dell Rapids.

Norma worked at the Sears Roebuck store in Brookings, SD for many years as well as running a household full of active children. Her home was always warm and welcoming to anyone who stopped in and there always seemed to be good company, cake and coffee at hand.

Norma will be remembered as a devoted wife and mother, who was always loving, kind and supportive to her children and family. She was a wonderfully attentive listener, advisor and a source of encouragement to the family. Her days were full of cooking, baking, cleaning, church activities, 4-H projects, farming duties, sewing ad many happy extended family dinners and card games.

She will be dearly missed by friends and family, but we find peace in the good memories, speak of her often, and try to honor her in how we live our lives and love one another.

Grateful for having shared her life are her children, Thomas (Germaine) Stenberg, Volga; Nancy (Ed) Morrison, Auburn, AL; Scott (Tawni) Stenberg, DeForest, WI; Kent (Kathy) Stenberg, Warrenton, MO, and her grandchildren, Colin Morrison (Joie Cannon), Goleta, CA; Elise Morrison (Broc Harzinski), San Francisco, CA; Anne Stenberg and Clark Stenberg, Volga, SD; brothers, Raymond Orlin (Linda) Opland and Rollin Dale (Amy) Opland along with many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband, Virgil, daughter,Cheralyn Ann and brother, Marlo Opland.

The family would like to thank the staff at United Living Community Nursing Home and the Brookings Hospice team for their compassionate care during Norma’s final days.
