Betty Nemmers

Betty M. Nemmers, 79, of Vernon, CT, died peacefully on Friday April 26th 2019. She was born July 30,1939 in Hinsdale Illinois one of three children of Roman J and Veronica (Rogers) Nemmers.

Prior to her retirement Betty was a school teacher at Vernon Center Middle School. She taught Special Education and Social Studies for over 20 years. Betty enjoyed gardening and was an avid and gifted artist.

Betty is survived by her sister and brother-in-law Lavonne Nemmers and Stephen Pivacek of Ft Myers FL, two nieces Krista Sabbatis and Beth McDonald, three nephews, Robert Pivacek, Roman Pivacek, and John R. Nemmers and all of their families. In addition to her parents she was predeceased by her brother, John E Nemmers.

A graveside service will be held in St Mary Cemetery in Dell Rapids, SD on Saturday, June 1, 2019 at 10:00 AM. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donors choice. Funeral arrangements are under the care of Kahler Funeral Home. www.kahlerfh.com.

Teresa Boyum

Teresa Ann Boyum, 91, of Sioux Falls peacefully passed away Friday evening at her home at Prince of Peace. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 am on Friday, April 26th at the Cathedral of St. Joseph in Sioux Falls. Inurnment will take place at a later date as Teresa has generously donated her body to the University of South Dakota’s Body Donation Program. Teresa recognized the value of this gift toward the education of our future healthcare professional and she would encourage all to consider such a gift. Visitation with family present is at 5:00 pm on Thursday, April 25th at St.Mary Catholic Church in Dell Rapids with a prayer service and rosary at 7:00pm.

Teresa was born on the family farm in Dell Rapids, SD to Albert T. and Anna Mae (Keefer) Bowen on December 23rd, 1927. Teresa was the youngest of three children, growing up with her sister Bernadine and brother Bill. Teresa attended St. Mary Catholic School in Dell Rapids, Class of 1945.

Teresa was united in marriage to Norvald James “Jim” Boyum on September 26, 1946. Jim and Teresa welcomed six children into their family, Kathleen, James, Thomas, Mark, Susan and Daniel and last fall celebrated their 72nd wedding anniversary.

Teresa was a strong, gentle, kind-hearted woman who together with Jim, raised their six children. In addition to raising four often rambunctious boys and two adorable girls, Teresa helped with the family enterprise on the 7D7 Mink Ranch at Renner. Later in life, Teresa was side-by-side with Jim when they launched their “retirement” endeavor when they founded I-90 White GMC in 1985. Together, they operated I-90 until 1993 when they retired for good. Teresa and Jim spent the next 12 years wintering in Mesa, AZ, surrounded by family and friends. In 2005 Teresa and Jim returned full-time to South Dakota, moving to Dell Rapids where they resided for 12 years. In 2017 they moved to Sioux Falls, residing at Laurel Oaks Apartments at Prince of Peace.

Teresa was a quiet, faith-filled woman and for 91 years she provided roots and wings for her family. How appropriate that she passed away on Good Friday — a wonderful day to return to the Lord. She will be missed by all who knew her.

Those grateful to have shared her life are husband Jim (d), daughters Kathleen and Sue (Brian Rainey). Sons Jim (d) (Kathy), Tom (Janet), Mark (Lora Cady) and Dan (Pam). Grandchildren Gia (d), BJ (Carla), Shane, April (Ryan), Cody (Christy), Jessie (James), Jeremiah, Tressa, Zach (Christine), Dulcie, Annie, Dylan, Bowen, Max, Olivia, Eva, eighteen great-grandchildren, one great-great grandchild and many treasured nieces and nephews.

Teresa was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Bernadine; brother, Bill; son, Jim; and granddaughter, Gia.

Teresa respectfully requested no flowers. Bonnie Sorsen

Bonnie Sorsen, 83, of Sioux Falls, formerly of Dell Rapids, passed away on Thursday, April 18, 2019. Her Mass of Christian Burial was held on Tuesday, April 23, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. in St. Mary Catholic Church, Dell Rapids. Visitation was on Monday, April 22, 2019 in the St. Mary Church Hall. The Christian Wake Service was at 7:00 p.m. in the church followed by the Rosary.

Bonnie was born on April 19, 1935, to Frank and Ella (Lewis) Walker in Junius, SD. She grew up on the family farm and attended school in Madison, SD, and graduated from high school there. After high school, she worked in Madison, where she met Herman O’Neal Lail. Together they had three children: Aloma, Rick and Vern.

Following their breakup, Bonnie moved to Sioux Falls and, in 1970, married Robert Sorsen. This union produced a daughter, Tabitha, born in 1973. Bonnie also lovingly embraced Robert’s three children: Jeff, Michone and Jill.

Bonnie was known as a caregiver, devoted most of all to her husband, Robert. She loved all her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her talents included playing the organ, sewing, macramé and baking. She also made original, intricately designed gingerbread houses from scratch.

She is survived by her husband, Robert; children Jeff Sorsen, Aloma (Bob) Graham, Michone (Paul) Collins, Rick Lail, Vern (Dana) Lail, Jill Sorsen and Tabitha (Ryan) Merriam; 12 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, all three of her siblings and two grandchildren.

Tributes and gifts can be directed to the family, which will be distributed to various charities.

Joan Zabel

Joan Elizabeth (Larson) Zabel passed away on April 15, 2019 at the age of seventy-seven after several years of declining health. Her funeral service will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 19, 2019 in the Lutheran Church of Dell Rapids. Visitation with the family present will be from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 18, 2019 in the Lutheran Church of Dell Rapids Chapel. Interment will be in the Union Cemetery in Maplewood, MN at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 20, 2019. There will be a reception and visitation at Starkson Family Life Celebration Chapel in Hastings, MN from 3:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. following the graveside service. Joan, the second of five children, was born on June 16, 1941 at Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD to her parents, Ernest and Martha Larson. She grew up on her family’s farm east of Dell Rapids, SD and attended the country school in Minnehaha County. In seventh grade, she began attending school in Dell Rapids and she graduated from Dell Rapids High School in 1959.

After high school, Joan attended Augustana College in Sioux Falls and earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing. Later, Joan received a Master’s Degree in Nursing Administration from the University of Saint Thomas in Saint Paul, MN.

After graduating from Augustana College, Joan moved to Saint Paul, MN. She met and fell in love with her future husband, Gary D. Zabel. They married on October 16, 1966 and had three sons. Joan worked full-time for thirty-four years in nursing, nurse education, and nursing administration before retiring in 1999.

After Gary passed away in 2000, Joan moved back to Dell Rapids in 2005. She reconnected with her high school beau, Daniel T. DeVaney, and they began their life together. She continued to travel widely and spend time with friends and family.

Joan was active in her church, both in Saint Paul and Dell Rapids—many will remember her beautiful knitting and crocheting ministry—as well as many other community organizations.

Joan was also passionate about her Norwegian heritage, a fantastic cook, a lover of music, and a keen selector of dangly earrings.

Joan is survived by her loving partner, Dan; her sons Erik (Diane), Kurt (Laura), and Anthony; her grandchildren, Jolena (David), Aleaha (Alex), Esther, and Trygve; her siblings Solveig (Jim), Steven, and Rebecca; along with many cousins, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ernest and Martha, her sister, Miriam, her husband, Gary, brother-in-law, Mike, and her daughter-in-law, Maren.

Joan was a strong, hard-working, and loving woman. She was a wonderful mother, sister, partner, grandma, aunt, cousin and colleague who will be greatly missed.

Floyd Heinemann

Floyd (Bud) Arthur Heinemann passed away Monday, April 8, 2019, at Ava’s House after a brief acute illness. Floyd was born in Garretson, SD, on April 15, 1928, to Arthur and Henrietta Heinemann. He grew up in the Garretson and Dell Rapids area on various farms with the family finally settling on a farm south of Dell Rapids. He attended St. Mary Catholic School in Dell Rapids through the 8th grade he was then needed to work on the family farm. He served in the army as a medical corpsmen at Fitzsimmons Army Medical hospital in Denver, Colorado. He returned home from the service and began his own farming career. He met and married Isabel Bott, started a family and raised five children. Floyd and Isabel were dedicated to a life of service to others and especially to their church. Education was also important to Floyd. He served on the Dell Rapids School Board for 25 years, and he served on many state and national education boards. In 2013, he was granted his diploma from Dell Rapids Public High School through a program aimed at veterans who did not graduate because of their service, to obtain their degree. Because of a health issue, he left farming in 1972 to begin a new career in agribusiness as a salesman for the Mormons Feed Company. The children of his customers knew him as the “Chiclets” man. When he retired, he continued to be active. He delivered mail as a rural mail carrier for a number of years as he and Isabel began their retirement together, which included becoming winter Texans. As time went by, Isabel developed Alzheimer’s dementia. Caring for her became his full time job. She passed away in May of 2010. He missed her very much. Both he and Isabel have donated their body to the Sanford School of Medicine. After her death, he needed to find something else to pass his time. He began his final commitment to service as volunteer, serving both the Alzheimer’s Association and the Sanford USD Medical Center. Some of his proudest moments in the last years of his life were his efforts to raise money for the Alzheimer’s Association and being recognized as the 2018 Volunteer of the Year for Sanford Medical Center.

He was preceded in death by Isabel, his wife of 56 years, his parents, two sisters, Mary Schmidt and Dorothy Frantzen, and one brother-in-law Bernard Frantzen, all of Dell Rapids, SD.

His family, who is grateful for sharing his life are his children, Dan (Cathy) Heinemann, Canton SD, Tim (Becky) Heinemann, Sioux Falls SD, Anne (Paul) Holland Rochester MN, Jeff(Laura) Heinemann, Smyrna GA, Pat (Tracey) Heinemann, Egan. SD, three sisters, Joyce (Richard) Lerdal, Sioux Falls SD, Virginia (Dick) Mergen, Dell Rapids SD, Ruby (Dick) Nelson, Overland Park KS, brother-in-law, Merlin Schmidt, Dell Rapids SD, eight grandchildren, and 3 great-grand children, who in his mind, were the “finest” around, and a large extended family, including his amazing Sanford friends.

He was proud of all the people he was close to and his work at the Medical Center gave him a new purpose.

Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, May 11, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. in St Mary Catholic Church, Dell Rapids SD. Visitation with family present will be on Friday, May 10, 2019 at Kahler Funeral Home with the Christian Wake Service beginning at 6:00 p.m. Funeral arrrangements are under the care of Kahler Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, the family and Bud request that all memorials be sent to the Alzheimer’s Association of South Dakota on behalf of “Team Isabel.”

Kathryn Cotter

Kathryn Cotter, 86, of Colton, passed away on Friday, April 5, 2019 at Prince of Peace in Sioux Falls. Her Mass of Christian Burial is at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 13, 2019 in St. Joseph the Workman Catholic Church at Huntimer. Interment is in the St. Joseph the Workman Cemetery. Visitation with the family present is from 5:00 pm. – 7:00 p.m. on Friday, April 12, 2019 in the church with the Christian Wake service at 7:00 p.m. Funeral arrangements are under the care of Kahler Funeral Home.

Kathryn Alice Murphy was born on August 21, 1932 in Oldham, SD, the daughter of Ed and Margaret Murphy. Kathryn grew up in the Oldham-Winfred area and graduated from Madison High School in 1950. She married Joseph Thomas Cotter on February 14, 1953 at St. Joseph’s Cathedral in Sioux Falls. They lived in Colton where they were happily married for 53 years and were blessed with six children. Kathy most recently resided at Prince of Peace in Sioux Falls.

Kathy spent her early years working on their family farm. In 1971, she decided to pursue nursing and obtained an L.P.N. degree. Later, in her mid-fifties, she earned an R.N. degree. Kathy excelled at nursing and referred to RN work as “a privilege.” Kathy served at Avera McKennan Hospital for nearly 30 years until her retirement.

Kathy enjoyed genealogy, sewing, and traveling with Joe – especially their trip to Ireland. Her greatest joy was family gatherings and the bigger the better. These gatherings swelled over the years as a result of six children, 16 grandchildren, and nine great grandchildren.

Those left to cherish her memory are her children, Jim (Pam) Cotter of Southern Shores, NC, Rob (Cheryl) Cotter of Goodland, KS, Mary Pfaff of Tea, Barbara (Bob) Sieps of Lincoln, NE, Patty (Matt) Miller of Sioux Falls, and Mark (Denise) Cotter of Sioux Falls; and her Sister-In-Law, Sr. Suzanne Cotter of Sioux Falls, SD.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe (2006), parents, two brothers, Virgil and Lawrence, and sisters, Frances and infant, Mary.

Lisa Husaboe

Lisa Husaboe, 40, of Trent, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, April 2, 2019 at the River Manor in Flandreau. Her funeral service is at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 11, 2019 in the Trent Baptist Church. Visitation with the family present is from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 10, 2019 in the church. A prayer service is at 7:00 p.m. Funeral arrangements are under the care of Kahler Funeral Home.

Lisa was born on January 31, 1979 at Watertown, SD. She was placed with Bill and Marlene Husaboe on April 17, 1979. The couple adopted her in October of 1981. She grew up in Trent and attended CCHS from 1983-1999. She graduated with the class of 2000 from CCHS. She then moved to ADVANCE in Brookings, SD where she lived for 17 years. She moved in with her sister and brother-in-law, Tamara and Jacob where she lived until the time of her death.

She was a member of the Trent Baptist Church, the Trent Study Club and the Trent Senior Citizens.

Lisa loved people of all ages, her church community, her time spent with family and traveling.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Don and Maimie Husaboe and Lynn and Celia Jorgenson, her aunts, Donna Marshall and Karen Husaboe and her uncles, Merle Marshall and Phil Caruso.

Those left to cherish her memory are her parents, William and Marlene Husaboe of Trent; her sister, Tamara (Jacob) Liesinger of Trent; her brothers, Lawrence (Teresa) Husaboe of Pierre, Travis Husaboe of Trent, James (Rebecca) Dubro of Harrisburg and Paul Husaboe of Dell Rapids; her niece, Juzeah Husaboe of Pierre, her nephew Luken Dubro of Harrisburg, her future niece, baby Liesinger and her extended family and many friends.

Donald Berg

Donald P. Berg, 97, of Dell Rapids passed away peacefully Sunday, March 31, 2019 at Dells Nursing and Rehab Center.

Funeral services will begin at 3:00 PM Friday, April 5, 2019 at Willow Creek Lutheran Church, rural Dell Rapids with burial in the church cemetery.

Visitation will from 5:00 to 7:00 PM Thursday, April 4, 2019 at Minnehaha Funeral Home in Dell Rapids.

Donald Phillip Berg was born December 26, 1921 to parents Andrew and Carrie (Woken) Berg on the family farm near Baltic. He attended Williamson Country School thru the 9^th grade and then worked on the family farm and for various other farmers in the area.

Don married Joyce Geraldine Tonseth on June 24, 1945 at Lyons, SD. They enjoyed over 31 years of marriage until her death on August 15, 1976. He was then married to Donna Walters on September 23, 1978 in Dell Rapids.

Don enjoyed farming in the Baltic, Colton and Dell Rapids area until 1964. He then went to work for Buskerud Construction and other construction jobs in Sioux Falls. Later on in life he was the handyman everyone knew and called on to fix anything.

Don took pride in being a head usher for 54 years and custodian for almost 50 years at Willow Creek Lutheran Church. His health finally made him realize he was going to have to pass the baton on for the custodian job. However this decision weighed heavy on his heart, so a week later he asked to come back again. He also enjoyed his Saturday morning coffee club the men had in the basement of the church, always providing treats and a story to share.

Don was a master gardener! For many years he loved tending to his pumpkins, squash, potatoes, radishes, cucumbers and tomatoes. Someone mentioned to him how to grow square pumpkins, but no one ever remembers it being a success!! He enjoyed sharing the fruits of his labor in the garden to many of his friends and neighbors, which included his homemade pumpkin pies he baked with pumpkins from his garden. He’ll always be remembered for baking all of his angel food cakes. Any occasion could be a reason to receive his cake, it didn’t matter if you were his daughter, grandchild, great-grandchild or worked in the bank. He just had such great pleasure in sharing his baking.

Don enjoyed going to see his great-grandchildren participate in their sporting events in the summer. The most fun was jumping in the Kawasaki side by side and heading to the Dairy Queen for his favorite Heath Blizzard afterwards.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Donna, Dell Rapids; daughter, Delight Hansen (Jeff Nelson), Dell Rapids; grandson, Nathan Hansen, Dell Rapids; great-grandchildren, Taylor, Nicholas and Jake Hansen, Dell Rapids; step sons, Steve (Diane) Brasseur, Blaine, MN and Jim Brasseur, Sioux Falls; step grandchildren, Serena, Isaac and Olivia Brasseur, Blaine, MN and Nicholas Brasseur, Arizona; brother-in-law, Ron (Barbara) Walters, Henderson, MN; sisters-in-law, Barb (Daryl) Rieck, Aberdeen, SD and Gerrie (Bob) Binion, Brownstone, MI and several nieces, nephews and relatives.

Donald Munk

Donald Munk, age 85, passed away on Wednesday, February 6, 2019, at his home in Garretson. Memorial service will begin at 2:00 PM Saturday, April 6, 2019, at the Minnehaha Funeral Home in Garretson. Memorial visitation will be one hour prior to the service.

Don was born on January 28, 1934 in Dell Rapids to Guy and Valborg (Christensen) Munk. He graduated from Dell Rapids High School and completed an accounting course from the Internal Accounting Society in Chicago. He served in the United States Army from 1956-58 as a Specialist 4^th Class Radio Operator and stayed in the Reserves until 1962. He lived in Dell Rapids and Sioux Falls until marrying Kathy Edwards Eide on August 22, 1986, at which time he moved to Garretson.

Don was employed by various places throughout his life. These included: Appliance Buyers Credit Corporation, Eutectic Company, Parsons Equipment Company (Pecaut Equipment), Sioux Steel, and at the west side Walmart as a greeter.

Don loved playing pool and cards with the “Old Fart Group”. He enjoyed visiting with friends and was an avid Green Bay Packers fan. He enjoyed all sports and was an avid golfer, hunter and fisher. He loved sharing his knowledge with kids and talking to people.

Survivors include his wife, Kathy of Garretson; children: Todd (Susan) Munk of Liberty, Missouri and their children: Guy and Hudson; Joni (John) Skellie of Shelbyville, Kentucky and their children Colleen and Logan, and Kerri (Scott) Warsord of Flaherty, Kentucky and their children Mac and Megan; step-children: Bill Eide, Jr of Rapid City and his son, Ozzie, and Andy Eide of Rapid City and his son, Brodie; granddaughter Madi Backes and her mother, Kirstie Backes; and siblings: Doug (Marianne) Munk and Alice (Jerry) Crisp both of Dell Rapids. He was preceded in death by his parents, and one grandchild.

Gerald Schreier

Gerald “Jerry” F. Schreier, 85, of Dell Rapids went to be with the Lord Wednesday, March 13, 2019 at Dells Nursing and Rehab Center.

Mass of Christian Burial was at 10:00 AM Monday, March 18, 2019 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Dell Rapids. Burial with Military Honors was in the church cemetery.

Visitation was held from 3:00 to 5:00 PM followed by a Wake Service at 5:00 PM Sunday, March 17, 2019 at Minnehaha Funeral Home in Dell Rapids.

Jerry was born on April 23, 1933 to Henry and Laura (Phelps) Schreier in Dell Rapids, South Dakota. Jerry’s love for farming started when he was a kid growing up and helping on the family farm. This is where he learned many of his mechanical skills. Jerry attended St. Mary Catholic School and then went on to serve his country in the Army. He was honorably discharged with a hardship when his father passed away so he could go home to continue farming. While farming, he worked many different jobs to supplement the farm income during his life. He was a “jack of all trades” and there wasn’t anything he couldn’t do when it came to the farm. He woke up every morning and got to do what he loved every day on the farm. He was very proud of the farm. Back in the day Jerry and Clara would host barn dances complete with a band and plenty to drink. He had a passion for selling and repairing Miller farm loaders for most of his life. Jerry was also a Funk Seed Dealer for many years serving the area.

He married his wife of 61 years, Clara (Galles) Schreier, on April 27, 1957. Together they raised five children on the family farm. He was a devoted member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Dell Rapids where he was also involved in The Knights of Columbus. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. His great sense of humor and that twinkle in his eye were always loved.

Jerry is preceded in death by his father, Henry; mother, Laura and siblings, Irene Schmidt, Genevieve Mines, Myrtle Duffy, Henry Schreier Jr., Harold Schreier, Beverly Shea and Charles Schreier.

He is survived by his wife, Clara of Dell Rapids; five children, Patrick Schreier of Apple Valley, MN, Noreen (Jerry) Abrahamson of Omaha, NE, James (Christine) of Fargo, ND, Timothy (Paula) of Dell Rapids, SD and Jeffrey (Jodie) of Moorhead, MN; ten grandchildren, Colleen Schreier, Diana Schreier, Jared (Kelsey) Abrahamson, Elyse Abrahamson, Jocelyn Abrahamson, Emily (Jon) Schroeder, Meghan Schreier, Abby (Robert) Gregersen, Jacob (Trystan) Schreier, Zacharey Schreier and several cousins, nieces and nephews.
