Watchdog Softball Splits Two Home Games

The Beresford Watchdog softball team hosted two different teams on Friday, May 5th, winning one and losing one.  The Watchdogs hosted both Wagner and Elk Point-Jefferson.

Beresford 12, Wagner 7

The Watchdogs scored seven runs late in the game to earn a come-from-behind 12-7 over the Wagner Red Raiders.  Both teams scored a run in the first inning.  The Watchdogs went ahead 5-1 after a four-run bottom of the third.  Wagner got two runs in the top of the fourth and three more in the top of the fifth to go ahead 6-5.  Beresford got the lead back with three runs in the bottom of the fifth and four more in the bottom of the sixth for a 12-6 lead.  Wagner added one run in the top of the seventh.

Lily Seivert had three hits, one a double, and two RBIs.  Harley Koth had three hits, two doubles, and an RBI.  Kennedy Merrigan had two hits, one a triple, and two RBIs.  Reese Olson, Ivy Keiser, and Kaylee Ivarsen all finished with two hits each, and each one with one double, and an RBI.  Halle Livingston had a double and RBI.  Brenna Dann added a double, and Kate Degen finished with a single.  Dann pitched all seven innings allowing seven runs, six earned, on nine hits and a walk with six strikeouts.

Elk Point-Jefferson 23, Beresford 11

In the second game of the day for Beresford, the Huskies broke an 11-11 tie with a big 12-run top of the sixth innings to earn the win.  The Huskies struck first with a run in the top of the first.  Beresford took the lead in the bottom of the first with three runs.  Elk Point-Jefferson cut the lead to 3-2 with a run in the top of the second.  Beresford added two more runs in the bottom of the third for a 5-2 advantage.

Things started to get wild offensively starting in the fourth inning.  The Huskies scored five times to take a 7-5 lead.  Beresford answered with six runs in their half of the fourth inning to regain the lead 11-7.  Elk Point-Jefferson tied the game with four runs in the top of the fifth and then put 12 runs on the board in the top of the sixth.

Merrigan had a home run and two RBIs.  Seivert had a single and two RBIs.  Livingston had a home run and RBI.  Dann finished with a triple and an RBI.  Koth and Ivarsen both had singles in the game.  Olson added two RBIs.  Merrigan pitched 5 1/3 innings allowing 16 runs, 11 earned, on 18 hits and six walks with eight strikeouts.  Dann pitched 2/3 of an inning and allowed seven earned runs on eight hits with a strikeout.
