The Alcester-Hudson Cub volleyball team survived a five-set home match against the Avon Pirates on Thursday, September 7th. The Cubs won by scores 25-17, 17-25, 25-17, 20-25, and 16-14.
Alcester-Hudson went on a 10-0 to start the first set. They led 17-5 before the Pirates made a little run. Avon cut the lead to 23-15, but the Cubs took the set 25-17. The second set started with a 3-3 tie. Avon went ahead 10-6. The Cubs battled back within a point, 15-14, but the Pirates went on a 4-0 run for a 19-14 lead. They kept that lead and won 25-17.
The Cubs went on a big run to start the third set, 8-1. They continued to lead throughout the rest of the match. Alcester-Hudson had 17-12 and then extended that lead to 23-16 before winning 25-17. After a 4-4 tie to start the fourth set, the Cubs took a 12-6 lead. The Pirates tied the score 15-15 and then went ahead 20-17. That momentum carried them to a 25-20 lead.
Avon scored the first three points of the fifth and final set. They extended the lead to 7-3, but the Cubs eventually tied the score 10-10. Alcester-Hudson then broke the tie with three straight points for a 13-10 lead. Avon responded with three straight of their own to tie the set 13-13. The two teams traded points and were tied 14-14. The Cubs got the final two points to win 16-14 and win the match.
