Watchdog Softball Finishes 2-1 at BEC Tournament

The Beresford Watchdog softball team finished with a 2-1 at the Big East Conference Tournament held on Saturday, May 24th.  They earned wins over Parker and McCook Central/Montrose but fell to Sioux Valley.

Beresford 16, Parker 1

The Watchdogs scored eight times in the bottom of the first to take a big lead as they cruised from there for the win.  Each team scored a run in the second inning to make the score 9-1.  Beresford added seven more runs in the bottom of the third to end the game on the 15-run rule.

Harper Olson had a single with three RBIs.  Keely Merrigan and Capri Mullinix both had a double and two RBIs each.  Hanah Colford had a single with two RBIs.  Tavyn Valder added a double and an RBI.  Ashlynn Olson had a single and an RBi.  Reese Olson had a triple.  Rylie Laurvick pitched two innings and allowed an unearned run on a hit and two walks with five strikeouts.  Kennedy Merrigan pitched an inning and struck out two batters.

Beresford 11, McCook Central/Montrose 0

The Watchdogs scored five times in the bottom of the first for an early 5-0 lead.  The score remained 5-0 until the bottom of the fourth.  Beresford added six more runs to extend the lead to 11-0.  The Cougars were held scoreless in the top of the fifth, and the game ended on the 10-run rule.

Valder had four hits in the game.  Harley Koth had two hits, one a home run, and three RBIs.  Mullinix had a home run and four RBIs.  A. Olson had a double with an RBI.  R. Olson had a single and an RBI.  Keely Merrigan added a double.  Kennedy Merrigan and Kate Degan both had one hit each.  Brynlee Mohning pitched two innings and allowed three hits and three walks with two strikeouts.  Kennedy Merrigan pitched three innings and had four strikeouts.

Sioux Valley 2, Beresford 0

The Cossacks were able to get a run in the top of the first and another in the top of the fifth to get a 2-0 win in a defensive battle.  The two teams combined for just seven hits in the game.

R. Olson had a double, and Valder had a single as the only two hits for Beresford.  Laurvick pitched 2 2/3 innings and allowed an earned run on four hits and three walks with five strikeouts.  Mohning pitched 2 1/3 innings and allowed an unearned run on a hit and two walks with four strikeouts.
