The Beresford Watchdog softball team hosted two different teams on Friday afternoon, April 18th. The Watchdogs dropped both games on the day, the first one to Dell Rapids and the second one to Alcester-Hudson.
Dell Rapids 14, Beresford 4
The Quarriers put the game away in the top of the seventh inning in the first game of the day for Beresford. Dell Rapids scored a run in the top of the first for an early 1-0 lead. They added two more in the top of the third to go ahead 3-0. The Watchdogs added a run in the bottom of the third to make the score 3-1. Dell Rapids would get another run in the fourth and three more in the fifth for a 7-1 lead. Beresford got three of those runs back in the bottom of the sixth and cut the lead to 7-4 going into the seventh. The Quarriers, however, scored seven times in the top of the seventh to put the game away.
Keely Merrigan had two hits. Kennedy Merrigan had a home run and two RBIs. Tavyn Vader and Ivy Keiser each had a single with an RBI. Brynlee Mohning added a triple. Mohning pitched all seven innings and allowed 14 runs, nine earned, on 14 hits and two walks with five strikeouts.
Alcester-Hudson 8, Beresford 5
The Cubs got four runs late in the game to take the 8-5 win in the second game. Each team scored twice in the firsts inning for a 2-2 tie. Alcester-Hudson got a single run in the third and another in the fourth for a 4-2 lead. Beresford tied the game, 4-4, with two runs in the bottom of the fifth. The Cubs, however, responded with three in the top of the sixth. The Watchdogs scored a run in the bottom of the sixth, but Alcester-Hudson scored another run in the top of the seventh.
Valder had three hits. Kate Degen had a home run and three RBIs. Keely Merrigan had a double and an RBI. Mohning added a single with an RBI. Harley Koth had a double, and Lily Seivert finished with a single. Rylie Laurvick pitched seven innings and allowed eight runs, seven earned, on 11 hits and a walk with six strikeouts.
