The Beresford Watchdog girls and boys basketball teams opened their season on the road at the Baltic Bulldogs on Friday, December 9th. Both teams were able to bring home the win.
Girls: Beresford 32, Baltic 28
The Watchdog defense held Baltic scoreless in the first quarter while building a 9-0 lead. The Bulldogs got their first points of the game with 7:29 to play in the second quarter, and from that point, they started chipping away at the lead. Beresford had their lead cut to 14-11 by halftime.
The Bulldogs were able to take the lead about midway through the third quarter, but the Watchdogs responded and took the lead back. Beresford led 23-22 heading into the fourth quarter. The Watchdogs outscored Baltic 9-6 in the final quarter for the four point win.
Boys: Beresford 55, Baltic 44
The Watchdogs turned a first quarter deficit into a nice win against the Bulldogs. Baltic ended the first quarter with an 11-7 lead, Beresford scored 17 points in the second quarter alone and took a 24-18 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Baltic was able to cut into the lead in the third quarter. Beresford’s lead had been cut to four points, 35-31, as the game headed into the fourth quarter. The Watchdogs then outscored the Bulldogs 20-13 in the final quarter for the win.
Bereford shot 31% (20-65) from the field, but just 2-20 from three-point area, and 13-25 from the free-throw line. Baltic shot 35% (15-43) from the field, 26% (6-23) from three-point area, and 8-13 from the free-throw line. Beresford out-rebounded Baltic 34-31 and also forced 28 Bulldog turnovers.
Tate VanOtterloo had 18 points, seven rebounds, five steals, and three assists. Jake Goblirsch finished with 12 points and seven rebounds. Andrew Atwood added eight points and five rebounds, while Seth James had six points and five rebounds.
