The Baltic 14U baseball team finished fifth at the 2025 South Dakota VFW Charlie Division State Tournament in Volga held Friday, August 8th through Sunday, August 10th.\u00a0 They played two pool-play games on Friday, a bracket game on Saturday, and then the placement game on Sunday.\u00a0 Baltic finished with an overall record of 1-3 on the weekend.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
In the first pool-play game on Friday, Mt Vernon\/Plankinton scored seven runs early and held off Baltic for the win.\u00a0 They scored two runs in the bottom of the first and five more in the bottom of the second for the 7-0 lead.\u00a0 Baltic scored three times in the top of the fourth, but they were only able to get one run in the top of the fifth.<\/p>\n
Oliver Nedved had two hits, one a double, and an RBI.\u00a0 Michael Grunewaldt and Brody Aspass had a single and an RBI each.\u00a0 Braeden Turner and Braden Breece both had one hit each.<\/p>\n
In the second pool-play game of the day, Hyaden Sundermann had an RBI ground out in the bottom of the first inning to give Baltic a 1-0 lead.\u00a0 Salem grabbed the lead in the second with three runs.\u00a0 They added five more in the top of the third and two in the top of the fifth for the 10-1 score.<\/p>\n
Brody Hansen, Laken Kortemeyer, Nedved, and Ayden Oschner all had one hit each.\u00a0 Sundermann finished with an RBI.<\/p>\n
Baltic faced Corsica\/Stickney in their first bracket game on Saturday.\u00a0 Corsica\/Stickney took the lead, 1-0, with a run in the bottom of the first.\u00a0 Grunewaldt had an RBI single in the top of the second to tie the game 1-1.\u00a0 Corsica\/Stickney, however, scored a run in the second, three in the third, and another in the fourth for a 6-1 lead.\u00a0 Each team scored a run in the fifth inning.\u00a0 Baltic tried to put together a rally.\u00a0 Grunewaldt had an RBI single in the top of the sixth, and Laken Kortemeyer had an RBI ground out in the top of the seventh, but a double-play ended the game.<\/p>\n
Grunewaldt had two hits and two RBIs.\u00a0 Turner also had two hits.\u00a0 Kortemeyer added a single and two RBIs.\u00a0 Hansen and Nedved both had a single.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
In the 5th\/6th place game on Sunday, Baltic took the lead for good in the third inning.\u00a0 Each team scored a run in the first inning for a 1-1 tie.\u00a0 Webster got two runs in the top of the second.\u00a0 Baltic responded with one run, and Webster led 3-2.\u00a0 Baltic would then score three runs in the bottom of the third, two in the fourth, one in the fifth, and another in the sixth for a 9-3 lead.\u00a0 Webster scored one more time in the top of the seventh.<\/p>\n
Hansen, Sundermann, and Grunewald all had two hits and an RBI each.\u00a0 Turner and Breece both had a single with an RBI.\u00a0 Nedved had a single, and L. Kortemeyer had an RBI.\u00a0 Grunewaldt pitched four innings and allowed three earned runs on three hits and four walks with five strikeouts.\u00a0 Nedved pitched two innings and allowed a hit with four walks and two strikeouts.\u00a0 Maddex Klein threw one inning and allowed an unearned run on a hit and walk with one strikeout.<\/p>\n
