The 2013 State A Competitive Cheer event was held in Rapid City on Friday, October 25th. Dell Rapids St Mary is the 2013 Class A Small Team Stunting/Tumbling Cheer Champions. Dell Rapids finished 3rd in the Class A Large Team Stunting/Tumbling Cheer division. Sioux Valley won the 2013 State A Grand Championship with 219.50 points. Dell Rapids St Mary finished 2nd with 2o3.00 points. Dell Rapids was fourth with 180.50 points.
Marion Redder
Marion C. Redder, 93, of Dell Rapids passed away on Thursday, October 24, 2013 at the Dells Nursing and Rehab Center. Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, October 28, 2013 at St. Mary Catholic Church. Interment will be in the St. Mary Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 1:30 p.m. with a Catholic Daughters Rosary at 2:30 p.m. and the Christian Wake service at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 27, 2013 at Kahler Funeral Home. Marion Aumer was born on May 9, 1920 at Dundee, MN, the daughter of Frank and Eliza Aumer. She grew up in Dundee and attended school in Fulda, MN, graduating in 1937. She worked as a beauty operator for a short time and then worked in Dundee, Windom, Redwood Falls, and Luverne as a telephone operator.
She was married to Herman Redder on July 8, 1947 in Dundee, MN. They made their home on a farm at Beaver Creek, MN. In 1962 they moved to their farm north of Dell Rapids. Herman died on April 25, 1995. Marion remained on the farm until the spring of 2000 when she moved into Orchard Hills. In February of 2012 she became of resident of the Dells Nursing and Rehab Center.
She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, altar society, the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, the Dell Rapids Garden Club and the Dell Rapids Quilters Club.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Paul, her sister, Elsie Aumer, her son, John and her grandson, Robert.
She is survived by her six sons, Joseph of Dell Rapids, Stephen (Patti) of Frisco, TX, Jeffrey (Teresa) of Mt. Holly, NJ, James (Deb) of Flandreau, Thomas (Joanne) of Trent and David (Loretta) of Watertown and her five daughters, Elizabeth (Ronald) Krupicka of Niobrara, NE, Rosemary (Thomas) Gangel of Wichita, KS, Joan (James) Redder-Lacey of Dell Rapids, Maria (Michael) Nichols of Ft. Valley, GA and Christina (Joe) Wilke of Dell Rapids; her 24 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren, numerous step grandchildren and step great grandchildren and her sister-in-law, Veronica Wiggins of Paullina, IA.
Rapid City Hosting Two State Events this Weekend
Rapid City will be hosting two state events October 25-26. Over 700 Student-Athletes will compete in the 68th Annual SDHSAA State Cross Country Meet to be held at Robbinsdale Park in Rapid City on Saturday afternoon, October 26th, beginning with the Class ‘B’ Girls’ race at 1:00 p.m. ct/12:00 p.m. mt. The entire Dell Rapids St Mary boys and girls cross teams qualified for the state event. Members of those teams include Anna Wolles, Cassy Geraets, Jackie Wolles, Mitch Roemen, Jared Scholten, Luke Brown, Matt Farmer, and Ethan Schmidt. Lexi Snyder and Zane Schumaker will be representing the Dell Rapids Quarriers at the state event.
Rapid City Stevens High School is the site for the 7th annual state competition for cheer and dance. Competition for Class A will be held on Friday, October 25th, with opening ceremonies beginning at 6:00 p.m. ct/5:00 p.m. mt. Class AA competition will begin at 12:00 p.m. ct/11:00 a.m. mt on Saturday, October 26th. Class A has 18 schools entered in the competitive cheer competition with 9 in the competitive dance competition. In Class AA, 17 schools will compete in competitive dance, with 16 set to compete in competitive cheer. Dell Rapids St Mary will perform around 7:10 p.m. ct/6:10 p.m. mt and Dell Rapids public will perform around 8:51 p.m. ct/7:51 p.m. mt. Quarriers Win Final Regular Season Game
The Dell Rapids Quarriers defeated the Vermillion Tanagers 40-10 on Thursday, October 24th, in Vermillion in the final regular season football game of the 2013 season. The Quarriers were in complete control from the start of the game. After receiving the opening kickoff, Dell Rapids drove the ball 80 yards in two plays and scored a touchdown on a 5o-yard run by Brett Nichols. Dell Rapids would score two more times in the first quarter on a 49-yard touchdown run by Riley Schmidt and a 39-yard touchdown run by Nichols. Nichols picked up his third touchdown in the game on a 34-yard run with 7:05 to go in the second quarter to give Dell Rapids a 27-0 lead. Tanner Solberg connected with Schmidt on a 22-yard touchdown pass with 5:21 to go in the half to give the Quarriers a 34-0 halftime lead. Jacob Huewe scored the final touchdown for Dell Rapids with 4:31 left in the 3rd on a 13-yard run. Vermillion picked up a three-yard touchdown by Tyler Madsen, and Ethan James hit a 30-yard field goal as time expired.
Dell Rapids gained 360 yards of total offense. 311 yards came on the ground attack, while 49 yards were picked up through the air. Nichols had five carries for 124 yards and three touchdowns. Schmidt had 10 carries for 109 yards and a touchdown. Huewe rushed the ball four times for 41 yards and a touchdown. Solberg finished the night 2-7 passing for 49 yards, a touchdown, and an interception. Defensively for Dell Rapids, Brock Reinhiller had 6.0 tackles. Schmidt finished with 4.0 tackles, and Matthew DeNoon and Jacob Habeger each had 3.5 tackles in the game. Tanner Ljunggren had a fumble recovery in the game.
The Quarriers finish the regular season with a 6-2 record. Dell Rapids will host Sisseton in the first round of the playoffs on Tuesday, October 29th.

Doreen Johnson-Weixel, 53, died Tuesday, October 22, 2013 at her residence in Sioux Falls, SD.
A visitation will begin at 2:00 pm Friday, October 25, 2013, at Miller Funeral Home, 507 S. Main Ave., with the family present from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm. A funeral service will be 10:00 am Saturday, October 26, 2013, at Miller Funeral Home with burial in Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Eureka, SD.
Grateful for having shared her life are her husband, Richard Weixel of Sioux Falls; her brother, Ralph Johnson III and his wife, Karol, of Dell Rapids, SD; a nephew, Elijah Johnson of Dell Rapids; her father, Ralph Johnson Jr. of Sioux Falls; and a host of other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Hilma May Johnson and Ralph Johnson Sr.

Sharon Smith
Sharon M. Smith was born January 26th, 1941 to Edmund and Hildegard (Keller) Ellwein in Freeman South Dakota. She passed away on Wednesday, October 23, 2013, from renal cancer.
She was baptized and confirmed at Heilbronn Lutheran Church in rural Freeman SD. Sharon attended 8 years of country school and graduated from Freeman High School in 1959. She married Stewart D. Smith on June 9, 1962 at Zion Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls, SD and together raised their three sons. Sharon was a member of Ben Clare United Methodist Church for over 40 years where she taught Sunday school and was the church organist for many years. She was also a member of the United Methodist Women’s circle. For 25 years, Sharon worked at several different companies, retiring from Citibank in March of 2007. She enjoyed reading, music, flowers, feeding and watching the birds in her back yard, and camping with her husband. She enjoyed being a mother, homemaker and spending time with her grandchildren.
Grateful for having shared her life are her husband of 51 years, Stewart; sons, Randall Smith and wife Tammi, Sioux Falls, Russell Smith, Maplewood MN, Ryan Smith and wife Angela, Redmond WA; grandchildren Marissa Smith and Dillon Smith; one step-granddaughter Natasha (Rob) Justice; six step-great-grandchildren; sisters Leila and her husband Harley Becker,Topeka KS, Mildred Bowman, Oakdale, CA, brother Myron Ellwein and his wife Neva, Delano, MN, Brother in law Robert Smith and wife Marilyn, Dell Rapids SD, and many treasured nieces and nephews.
Sharon was preceded in death by her parents, 3 sisters, Lucille Schultz, Ramona Ellwein and Renee Ellwein, Brother in law Gary Bowman and nephew James Schultz.
The family would like to thank all of the friends and relatives for their support during Sharon’s illness. Sharon was comforted by their visits and cherished them very much.

Bulldogs Spoil Senior Night
The Madison Bulldogs defeated the Dell Rapids Quarriers 3-0 in volleyball action on Tuesday, October 24th, on Senior Night by scores of 25-11, 25-17, 25-10. With the first game tied 4-4, Madison went on a big run by scoring 13 straight points to take a 17-4 lead and eventually win the first game. The second game was very close throughout the first half. Neither team was able to get a lead of more than a couple of points, and the game was tied at 15-15. However, the Bulldogs were able to slowly pull away from the Quarriers at 20-17 on the way to the win. Again in the third game, both teams remained close. The game was tied at 7-7, and then again at 10-10, but Madison closed out the game and match with 15 straight points.
Emily Boyle led the Quarrier offense with four kills on the night. Brittnay Welbig had four set assists along with two aces in the match. Brittany Kludt finished with three blocks. Shelby Wrage had seven digs, and Baily Munk finished with six digs.
Dell Rapids falls to 1-20 on the year. The Quarriers will travel to Chester on Friday, October 25th, for their next match.
JV Results:
The JV team defeated Madison 25-14, 25-17. Mara Adams had five kills in the match. Brittnay Welbig had 13 set assists. Emily Boyle finished with three aces. Defensively for Dell Rapids, Megan Miles had two blocks and Adams collected four digs.
C Team Results:
The C team lost to Madison 15-25, 10-25. Kennedy Mergen had three kills in the match. Autumn Schumaker had four set assists to go along with two aces. Chloe Solberg also had two aces in the match. Betsy Amundson had eight digs, while Kenzie Gullickson finished with seven.

Blog Notes: For the seventh straight week. Lincoln retained control at the top of 11AAA poll. The Patriots, which defeated SF Washington, 43-7, had unanimous support for the fifth straight week. Caden Quintanilla had 182 yards rushing and 3 TDs in the win as he surpassed 3K rushing in his career (3,154 yards, 48 TDs). Lincoln is 8-0 record for the first time since 1972. #2 Roosevelt stayed on the winning trek with a fifth straight win – 31-7 over SF O’Gorman. Taryn Christion had 197 yards rushing and two TDs along with 149 yards passing. Roosevelt led, 24-0, at halftime and allowed only a second half defensive TD to O’G, twice stopping the the Knights at the doorstep of the end zone with goal line stands. #3 BV, which hosts 11AA #5 Harrisburg on Thursday, held onto the #3 spot despite a 16-0 loss to 11AA #1 Pierre, which ended the Lynx five-game winning streak. Blake Stone had 118 yards rushing to lead #4 Rapid City Central past city rival RC Stevens, 14-7. The Cobblers, which have been outscored 183-to-147, has turned things around after a 1-3 start. The win over Stevens gave RCC a third straight win with O’Gorman on the schedule Thursday (Oct. 24). Despite a loss to Roosevelt, O’Gorman held onto the #5 spot. Both Aberdeen Central (3-4), which defeated Huron, 14-12, and now have won two of the last four games, and Sioux Falls Washington (3-5), earned votes in this week’s rankings.

Blog Notes: #1 Pierre, which barely edged out Yankton a week ago for the top spot, was the unanimous choice this week. The Governors had a huge bounce-back win as they shutdown 11AAA #3 Brandon Valley, 16-0, limiting the Lynx to 44 yards in total offense. Pierre, which has a 210-to-100 point differential, closes the regular season with a home tilt with Aberdeen Central. Shay Bratland had 101 yards rushing and a 71-yard TD reception with three combined TDs to lead the Watertown Arrows to their third win in four games, a 34-14 win over Mitchell. With the sudden hot streak, the Arrows moved into the #2 spot in the 11AA poll. Watertown closes the regular season on the road against #4 Brookings (3-4). After three-straight wins, including a 29-26 verdict over Pierre last week, Yankton fell to 4-4 on the season after dropping a 26-18 decision to new #5 Harrisburg, which built a 26-10 lead and held on against the Bucks. The Tigers have 2-of-3, including wins over both Brookings and Yankton. With a loss to Watertown, Mitchell fell out of the rankings.

The Bulldogs, which owns a 310-to-97 scoring edge, has outscored two straight opponents by a 90-to-22 margin and concluded its best-ever regular season finish. #2 West Central won a second straight game, a 56-0 win over Milbank Area as they had 368 yards rushing. Through seven games, the Trojans, which face Tea Area on the road Thursday, have a 264-to-66 scoring differential. #3 Hot Springs picked up a 41-6 win over Spearfish for a sixth-straight win. The Bison have rolled up a 286-to-32 point edge (301-to-67 overall) in the winning streak. A 32-yard halfback TD pass from Riley Schmidt to Beau Carpenter with six seconds to play lifted #4 Dell Rapids to a 13-6 win over Tri-Valley, snapping a two-game losing streak to the Panthers. Tri-Valley had delivered the only losses to the Quarriers in their championship seasons of 2011 and 2012. With a 46-yard TD pass from Isaac Faldmo to Brody Van Ginkel with 42 seconds left, #5 Dakota Valley picked up a third straight win (fourth in five games) with a 20-14 win over Beresford. Tea Area, which has a 209-to-89 point differential, received votes in the poll after rebounding from two straight losses to take a 44-13 win over Lennox.

Dalton Cox had four total TDs and 131 yards receiving for the Cavaliers, which has been in the top spot since preseason. Roncalli, which closes with Milbank Area, has a 307-to-40 scoring differential. Winner, the defending 11B champion, picked up their state-best 19th straight win with a 56-6 decision against Crow Creek. Winner owns a 261-to-54 point differential, allowing just a combined 20 points over the last four games. #3 St. Thomas More picked up its second straight win with a 38-6 victory over 11AA Sturgis. STM, has outscored the last two opponents, 82-to-13, and own a 237-to-71 overall point differential. They finish the regular season with Mobridge-Pollock. While they didn’t record a fourth straight shutout, Canton won big again with a 50-20 victory over a solid Wagner team. Canton, which received a first-place vote this week, rolled to a fifth straight win with its second straight game of 50 points or better. In the winning streak Canton has a 206-to-54 (256-to-76 overall) scoring margin over opponents. Four different players scored rushing TDs to key #5 Parkston’s 30-0 win over Redfield-Doland and end the Pheasants six-game winning streak. The Trojans, which travel to Bon Homme (5-2) on Thursday, has a 166-to-40 scoring differential.

Blog Notes: There was a shake-up in Class 9AA as previously top-ranked Arlington dropped a 38-30 road decision to 9B #3 Dell Rapids St. Mary, 38-30. After their first loss of the season, Arlington fell to #3 in the 9AA poll. However, the Cardinals still received a first-place vote this week. The new #1 is Garretson, which has successfully made the transition from 11B to 9AA this season. Garretson, which closes on the road against three-time 9-man champion Canistota, defeated Irene-Wakonda, 38-6 as Austin Mathiesen recorded 10 carries for 153 yards and a 52-yard TD run. QB Jesse Brockhouse had four total TDs, two by pass, a 44-yard run and a 92-yard kickoff return. The Blue Dragons have allowed only 20 points in the last three wins. Overall, they have a seven-game streak to open the season when they own a 286-to-74 margin. Gregory, the preseason #1 is getting healthy (Brady Boes has a couple of others have returned) and have five straight wins since a 34-14 loss to Avon in week two. The Gorillas moved up to #2 in the poll and received a first-place vote. Gregory, which plays Tripp-Delmont/Armour on Thursday to close the regular season, owns a 287-to-114 overall scoring margin vs. opponents. #4 Deubrook wrapped up the regular season with a 52-14 win over DeSmet-Iroquois, winning for a seventh straight game after losing the opener to Arlington. The Dolphins are one of the most explosive teams in 9-man football, scoring 50 points or more four times. In 6-of-8 games, they have surpassed 40 points, led by Riley Hansen, who has a state-best 1,768 rushing yards (two games over 300 yards rushing) and 26 TDs. #5 BEE finished the regular season with a 49-14 win over Kimball-White Lake as the Seahawks won for the fifth consecutive time. Wade Miller led the way with 17 carries for 182 yards and two TDs and has 151 carries for 1,207 yards and 19 TDs in 2013. In five straight wins, BEE has a 207-to-42 scoring margin and has two shutouts. Overall, they own a 309-to-113 edge in points.

The Titans own a 312-to-47 scoring edge over opponents, including 149-to-12 over the last three games. #3 Wolsey-Wessington, which owns a 318-to-56 scoring differential, moved up to #3 after a 7th straight win, a 30-6 decision against Hitchcock-Tulare. Lorenzo Williams, who went over 1K rushing for the first time in his career (90-1,131-11 TDs), had 25 carries for 213 yards and two TDs. Ryne Johnson (1,350 rushing yards, 19 TDs) added 16 carries for 142 yards and two TDs. Wolsey-Wessington has a pair of 1K rushers for the second straight year and have recorded at least 400 yards rushing in six of seven games. Despite another win, Colome dropped to #4 in the poll. Colome, which recorded a 52-30 win over Platte-Geddes/Dakota Christian, closes the regular season with a game vs. South Central. The Cowboys have six straight wins, putting up 48 points or more in four of the last five games. Potter County won a third straight game to move to 6-1 with a 56-0 win over McLaughlin/Wakpala. The Battlers have a 222-to-68 scoring differential.

Brody Grantham had 23 carries for 150 yards and Dusty Quiram had 26 carries for 153 yards and two TDs to lead the Chargers to an eighth straight win this season. Hamlin, which hasput together an 8-0 regular season for the second straight season, owns a 365-to-50 scoring margin this season. #2 Avon, which closes the regular season against Andes Central, has put together a 327-to-77 point differential this season. The Pirates have scored at least 34 points in every game this season and have five games with over 40 points with a high of 70 two weeks ago. After losing for first time this season, Faith dropped from #3 to #5 in the poll. Faith was defeated by Lemmon-McIntosh (4-3) as Brody Peterson rushed for 252 yards and three TDs. Moving into the #3 spot was Dell Rapids St. Mary, which defeated 9AA #1 Arlington, 38-30. The Cardinals have scored 38 points or more in all seven games and 40 points or more five times. They close the regular season on Thursday against Lake Preston. With a 31-6 win over Philip, #4 Wall won for a sixth straight time this season as they have built a 305-to-72 point differential. Wall will play unbeaten New Underwood on Monday (Oct. 21) and Stanley County on Thursday. In the past three wins, they own a 152-to-32 edge. Also receiving votes was Kadoka Area (6-1) which stayed hot with a fifth straight victory. They have put together a 295-to-147 scoring edge, including 156-to-48 in the past three games. Despite a loss, Harding County (5-2) received poll support as did victorious South Central (5-2) and Faulkton Area (6-1).
Cardinals Pick up Big Win over Arlington
The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals defeated the #1 team in 9AA, the Arlington Cardinals, by a score of 38-30 on Friday, October 18th. St Mary put up 404 yards of total offense in the game, 365 rushing yards and 39 passing yards. Josh Brown finished the game with 23 carries for 172 yards and three touchdowns. Ben Bunkers had 16 carries for 108 yards and a touchdown. Christian Schnieders also had 11 carries for 81 yards. Wes Heinricy was 1-3 passing for 22 yards and a touchdown. Bunkers was 1-4 passing for 17 yards. Noah Fiegen had a 22-yard touchdown reception.
Defensively for St Mary, Jared Scholten had nine tackles in the game. Brown finished with 7.5 tackles. Leon Maxwell had six tackles and one sack. Fiegen had two sacks in the game, and Jonah Longville finished with three tackles and a sack. Heinricy had four tackles and a late-game interception that would seal the win for St Mary.
Head coach Ross Flemmer said, “It was a big win for us. It was a fun, hard-hitting, well-fought game by both teams. Our kids fought back from adversity and played hard. Our defense really picked it up in the second half and did a great job. Our defensive and offensive line really did a great job.”
The win improves St Mary’s record to 6-1 on the year. Dell Rapids St Mary will finish up the year in Lake Preston on Thursday, October 24th.
City Council Meeting: 10/21/13
The Dell Rapids City Council will meet in regular session on Monday, October 21st, at 7:30 p.m. at the City Chambers. Some of the items on the agenda include an amendment to the AT&T agreement of the water tower lease, first reading of an amendment to ordinance 779 – discharge of fireworks, and the administrative report.
