Rudy Becker

January 18, 2014 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

Rudy BeckerRudy Roy Becker peacefully left this earth on January 15, 2014 following a courageous three year battle with cancer.

Rudy was born on October 31, 1950 to Art and Jeanette Becker. He grew up on the family farm north of Freeman near Silver Lake and was baptized at the Silver Lake Mennonite Church.  After attending one year of country school, Rudy continued his education at Freeman Elementary and Freeman High School. He furthered his studies by completing two years at Freeman Junior College.  Rudy married Rita Schrag on February 5, 1972 and they were blessed with two daughters, Kristi & Lori. They made their home north of Freeman for 41 years. Farming was his passion at an early age and continued until his health declined.

When Rudy wasn’t farming, he enjoyed all aspects of car racing – whether it be watching a NASCAR race, or racing his “Red Hot” Ford Fairlane at Thunder Valley. As the years went by, Rudy down shifted from racing fast cars to antique tractor pulling.  We saw the softer side of Rudy when he spent time with his granddaughter, Maddie Rose, who he affectionately called “Punkie.” Whether it be riding around the farm on the John Deere gator or dipping Oreos at the kitchen table, Rudy treasured these moments.

Waiting to greet him in Heaven are his parents, Art & Jeanette, numberous aunts and uncles and a handful of close friends.  He will be greatly missed by his loving wife, Rita of Marion, SD; daughters, Kristi Becker (boyfriend Ron Hughes) of Sioux Falls, SD, Lori (Joe) and granddaughter Madeline Rose Stanford of Dell Rapids, SD, and many other friends and family.

Any memorials, not otherwise designated, will be directed to Sanford Hospice – Freeman.  Condolences may be left at www.walterfuneralhomes.org.

Battle of the Cardinal Friday Night

January 17, 2014 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal girls and boys basketball teams are traveling to Arlington to take on the Cardinals on Friday, January 17th.  The Friday night boys game turned into a double-header with the girls teams after weather postponed the Thursday night girls games.

The St Mary girls team enters the game against Arlington on a three game winning streaking.  The streak started with an overtime win in Chester on 12/30 by a score of 51-48.  They followed that game with a win over Marion 52-41 on January 3rd.  The third win game against Lake Preston on January 7th by a score of 59-43.  St Mary looks to pick up their fourth win in a row and sixth on the season.

The St Mary boys team is looking to get back into the win column.  They have lost four in a row, however, in a couple of those games even though the final score is deceiving, St Mary has been within striking distance of picking up a win.  St Mary looks to pick up their second win on the season and second win in the Dakota Valley Conference.

Hear what both Coach LeBrun and Coach Schmidt had to say about their team’s in their previous games and what they must do to pick up wins in Arlington.

Quarriers Hang on Against SF Christian

January 14, 2014 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

The Dell Rapids Quarriers took a 21-point lead into halftime, but had to fight to hang on for the win 61-57 against the Sioux Falls Christian Chargers on Tuesday, January 14th, in Dell Rapids.  The Quarriers started the game on a 12-2 run, and ended the first quarter with a 15-point lead at 21-6.  Dell Rapids was able to extend that lead to 43-22 at halftime.  The third quarter was tough on both teams as neither offense could get anything going.  The quarter ended with Dell Rapids ahead 49-32.  However, the Chargers made a come-back in the fourth quarter.  SF Christian cut the lead to 12 points at the 3:40 mark, and then got the lead down to just four points with :30 remaining.  Dell Rapids wouldn’t let the Chargers get any closer as the Quarriers hung on for the win.

Head coach Jason Fersdahl said, “We played our best basketball of the season thus far in the first half against a tough Sioux Falls Christian team.  Our pressure defense had SFC frustrated, and we were able to convert their turnovers into transition points early.  We knew that SFC was too good of a team to not make a strong second half run, and they were able to do that in the fourth quarter.”

Dell Rapids finished the game shooting 24-42 (57%) from the field, 20-33 (61%) from 2-point range, 4-9 (44%) from 3-point range, but only 9-25 (36%) from the free-throw line.  The Quarriers also had a total of 22 team rebounds, six blocked shots, 10 steals, 16 assists and 13 turnovers.

“We did not shoot free throws well throughout the game, and we left some opportunities on the table to maintain the comfortable lead we built in the first half.  Offensively, we got stagnant in the second half and, when you are not making free throws, things tend to tighten up even more,” said Fersdahl.

Dell Rapids had three players finish in double-figures, led by Ty Hoglund with 20 points and five assists.  Cody Nielsen finished with 19 points, and Zach White added 16 points.  White also had a team-high eight rebounds in the game.  Riley Schmidt had four steals defensively for Dell Rapids.

“In the end though, we earned another conference victory over a tough opponent, and we showed glimpses of the type of team we can be,” added Fersdahl.

The Quarriers improve to 6-1 on the year, and 5-0 in the Dakota XII Conference.  Dell Rapids will host Cheyenne-Eagle Butte on Saturday, January 18th.  The game will be webcast on Big Sioux Media.

Walter Ellefson

January 12, 2014 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

Walter EllefsonFuneral service for Walter Ellefson will be Wednesday at 11 AM at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Pipestone. Interment will be in Lone Rock Cemetery, rural Flandreau. Visitation will be Tuesday from 2 – 7 PM, with family present from 5 – 7 PM, prayer service at 7 PM, all at the Hartquist Funeral Home – Pipestone Chapel. To sign an online registry, please visit www.hartquistfuneral.com.
Walter Ellefson was born to Peter and Anna (Cherney) Ellefson on the family farm in Lone Rock Township, rural Flandreau, SD on February 21, 1929, during a raging blizzard. Dr. Walter Benjamin from Pipestone and his nurse took the train from Pipestone to Airllie where Peter met them with horses and a sleigh. The day after baby Walter was born, the neighbor, Harry Herbert, took the doctor and nurse back to Pipestone as Peter’s horses were exhausted. Walter attended grade school in the nearby Simons Country School, and later graduated from Egan High School. Walt’s father died when he was 11 years old. The family continued to live on the farm. Walt started working summers for his cousin, Willis Ellefson, when he was 13, giving all his wages to his Mother. He attended South Dakota State College in Brookings for one year on a scholarship from John Morrell. He then began farming with his brother, Quentin.

Walter married Carol Christensen on January 23, 1954, and they farmed the family farm for one year. Walt was then called to serve in the Army.  He served in A Battery 553 Field Artillery, 7th Army, stationed in Fort Sill, OK from February of 1955 to November of 1956. He was awarded the “Soldier of the Month” honor twice. Their son, Michael, was born while they were in Oklahoma. The family returned to Pipestone, MN and farmed nearby for three years. Their daughter, Diane, was born when they were on that farm. In 1960 they moved to the Johnson farm in Blinsmon Township, SD and in 1966 to the Stickel farm. In 1984 they moved to their new home on the family farm in Lone Rock Township. Walt enjoyed farming with his John Deere machinery, long hours in the field, raising hogs and sheep (sometimes), taking Mike and Diane in the truck with him to the Sioux Falls stockyards, helping them with 4-H livestock projects, and going to fairs with Mike. He grew Sokota seed corn for many years. After “retirement” he farmed with son until 2011. His interest in farming continued and he loved going for drives to see how the crops were progressing. He felt blessed to be able to do what he loved, to be a farmer, for so many years. It was very important to Walt that he was able to provide well for his family, to give his children the education they wanted and to pass on the legacy of the family land. Walt was baptized and confirmed in the Lone Rock Lutheran Church. He was a member and served in leadership positions of the Lone Rock church, then Messiah, Lone Rock Historical Church, and St. Paul Lutheran in Pipestone. Walt’s Christian Faith and values directed his daily life. He served his community in several capacities: as a 4-H leader in the Pleasant Valley Club, the Lone Rock Cemetery Board, the Township Board for Blinsmon & Lone Rock townships, and the school board for Blinsmon and Flandreau schools. He enjoyed serving on the Board of directors for Sioux Valley Energy for 30 years, and the SD Rural Electric Board for 8 years, also serving as an officer on both boards.

Walt died as the result of bladder cancer at the Dells Nursing and Rehab center in Dell Rapids, SD on Friday, January 10, 2014 at the age of 84 years, 10 months, and 20 days.

He is survived by his wife, Carol; son, Michael (Jackie); daughter, Diane (Alan) Blankenfeld; grandchildren, Peter (Erica) Blankenfeld and their children Taelor and M’Kinleigh, Adam (Jovan) Blankenfeld, Carly (Jeremy) Hanson, Bryan Ellefson and Bethany Ellefson; nieces, Betty (Jerome) Haak, Barbara (Woody) Stahl and Judi (John)Hostler, and their families; and special friends, Dale, Merlyn, Brenda and Greta. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Gertrude Johnson and Gladys Cheney; and brother, Quentin.

Dell Remains Unbeaten in Dak 12 Play

The Dell Rapids Quarrier boys basketball team remained perfect in Dakota XII Conference play with a 72-62 win over the Beresford Watchdogs on Thursday, January 9th.  In the first quarter, neither team had a lead of more than five points, and it was the Quarriers that held a slight 17-15 lead after the first quarter.  Beresford held a 32-31 lead with 1:53 to play in the second quarter before the Quarriers closed the quarter out on a 10-0 run to take  41-32 lead into halftime.  The Watchdogs scored the first 11 points of the third quarter to regain the lead at 43-41 at the 4:47 mark.  The Quarriers scored their first basket of the third quarter with 4:08 to go to tie the game at 43-43.  Both teams would score six points each to end the third quarter tied at 49-49.  The Watchdogs took their final lead of the night with 7:30 left in the game at 52-51.  Dell Rapids then delivered the knock-out punch, scoring the next 15 points over three minutes to take a 66-52 lead that they wouldn’t relinquish.

Head coach Jason Fersdahl said, “This was really a game of runs; it seemed that everytime we were able to extend the lead, Beresford would respond by hitting some big shots.  Fortunately, we were able to make a strong fourth quarter run, and I think our constant defensive pressure throughout the game wore them out a bit down the stretch.”

Dell Rapids finished the game shooting 26-48 (54%) from the field, 5-17 (29%) from three-point area, and 15-17 (88%) from the free-throw line.  The Quarriers picked up 28 total rebounds, 11 steals, 16 assists, and had 12 turnovers in the game as a team.

“Beresford shot lights out most of the night, hitting nine three-pointers for the game, and there were not very many of those shots that were not strongly contested by our defense.  We continued to get good shots on the offensive end, and we were able to finish strong at the basket throughout the night.   We shot free throws better than we have all year,” said Fersdahl.

The Quarriers were led by Ty Hoglund with 18 points.  Cody Nielsen finished with 14 points, and Zach White had 12 points.  Nielsen led the team with seven rebounds in the game.  Ben Hammer and White each had five rebounds.  Hoglund also led the team with three steals and six assists.

Fersdahl said, “We were a little too impatient at times on offense and we will need to improve in this area to increase our chances of winning close games.”

Dell Rapids improves to 5-1 on the year, 4-0 in the Dakota XII Conference.  The Quarriers will host the Sioux Falls Christian Chargers on Tuesday, January 14th.  The game will be webcast on Big Sioux Media.

Quarriers Win in Pipestone

January 8, 2014 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

Quarrier LogoThe Dell Rapids Quarriers boys basketball team picked up their fourth win of the year in Pipestone, MN on Tuesday, January 7th.  The Quarriers defeated the Arrows 84-68.  Dell Rapids led by just one point at halftime, 41-40, but held Pipestone to just 28 points in the second half on the way to the win.

Head coach Jason Fersdahl said, “Defensively, Pipestone presented some matchup problems for us as Moeller was really tough in the post.  We were able to make things much more difficult for them in the second half and I think we were able to tire them out a little bit with our defensive pressure.”

Dell Rapids shot 27-50 (54%) from the field, 6-14 (43%) from three-point area, and 24-33 (73%) from the free-throw line.  The Quarriers also pulled down 34 rebounds as a team, had 10 steals, 13 assists, and only turned the ball over 10 times in the game.

“Offensively, I thought this was the best we have played so far this season as we had pretty good ball movement, and we shot the ball well from the field.  We played this game at a fast pace, and we are at our best when we are able to do that.  I was pleased that we ended the night with only 10 team turnovers, and we out-rebounded a tough Pipestone team,” said Fersdahl.

The Quartiers were led by Ty Hoglund with 26 points, five steals, and three assists.  Zane Shumaker finished the game with 21 points and four assists.   Cody Nielsen added 13 points and grabbed nine rebounds.  Ben Hammer had three blocked shots in the game.

Dell Rapids improves to 4-1 on the year.  They will host the Beresford Watchdogs in a Dakota 12 Conference game on Thursday, January 9th.  The game will be webcast on Big Sioux Media.
