Quarriers Pick up Win Over Region Foe

January 22, 2014 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

Quarrier LogoThe Dell Rapids Quarriers boys basketball team picked up a win over Region 3A foe, the Garretson Blue Dragons, 68-63 on Tuesday, January 21st, in Dell Rapids.  The Quarriers got out to a quick start once again, scoring 21 first quarter points and taking a 21-12 lead after the first quarter.  The Blue Dragons were able to cut into the Quarrier lead in the second quarter and trailed Dell Rapids 35-32 at halftime.  Garretson again picked up a couple of points in the third quarter, and Dell Rapids held just a one-point lead, 54-53, after the third quarter.  Dell Rapids was able to hold Garretson to just 10 points in the fourth quarter for the win.

Head coach Jason Fersdahl said, “Coming off of the tough, emotional loss against Cheyenne-Eagle Butte and then missing our Monday practice due to bad weather, I sensed our team was a little flat coming in to the Garretson game.  We were able to start pretty quickly in the first quarter by moving the ball well and forcing a few turnovers, but I thought we lacked defensive intensity most of the game.”

Dell Rapids shot 24-55 (44%) from the field in the game.  They were 7-20 (35%) from three-point area and 13-18 (72%) from the free-throw line.  The Quarriers pulled down 47 rebounds as a team and dished out 17 assists.  However, Dell Rapids only had six steals in the game and turned the ball over 19 times.

“We dominated the battle of the boards in this game and that was a huge key to coming out on top.  Zach White was an absolute monster on the boards, finishing the night with 18 rebounds, with six of them coming on the offensive end.  We had way too many turnovers in this game, with most of our turnovers coming in the half court set when we were too impatient on offense,” said Fersdahl.

White led the team with 15 points, 18 rebounds, and four assists in the game.  Cody Nielsen had a team-high 17 points and six rebounds.  Zane Schumaker finished with 12 points, Ben Hammer had 11 points, and Ty Hoglund added 10 points.  Hoglund also had four assists.

Dell Rapids improves to  7-2 on the year.  The Quarriers will host #1 Madison on Thursday, January 23rd.  The game will be webcast on Big Sioux Media.

Fersdahl added, “Garretson was able to drive into the lane and break our defense down almost at will, and that is something we cannot let happen.  We also need to do a much better job at defending the three point line and that comes through better communication on defense. We will need to refocus on the defensive end and eliminate some of our careless turnovers on offense to have success throughout the rest of the season.”

The third quarter was the tough offensive quarter for the Quarriers, as Dell Rapids was only able to score three points while West Central found their rhythm to take their largest lead of the night at 33-19 at the end of the quarter.  Both teams were able to knock down a few shots and free throws in the fourth quarter, but Dell Rapids was unable to close the gap.

Braves End Quarrier Win Streak

Zach White buzzer-beater to send game into overtime.

The Cheyenne-Eagle Butte Braves ended the four-game winning streak of the Quarriers by beating Dell Rapids 85-81 in overtime on Saturday, January 18th.  Dell Rapids jumped out to an early first quarter lead and had a 27-15 lead after the first quarter.  After leading by as much as 12 in the 2nd quarter, Cheyenne-Eagle Butte cut the Quarrier lead down to six at 44-38 by halftime.  The Braves took their first lead of the game with 2:50 to go in the 3rd quarter, at 54-53.  The Braves ended the 3rd quarter with the lead at 60-57.

The Quarriers scored the first four points of the fourth quarter to regain the lead at 61-60.  However, the Braves scored the next seven points to take a six point lead of 67-61 with 3:20 to go in the fourth quarter.  Dell Rapids pulled within one point at 69-70 with :29 left in the quarter.  After two free-throws made by the Braves, Ty Hoglund was fouled at half court with :01.8 left on the clock.  The foul put him on the free-throw line with a one-and-one.  Hoglund’s free throw missed, however, a lane violation was called on Cheyenne-Eagle Butte giving Hoglund another chance.  On the second chance, Hoglund hit the first free throw to make the score 70-72.  He purposely missed the second free throw, and Zach White tipped in the miss at the buzzer to tie the game at 72-72.  In overtime, the game was once again tied at 75-75 with 2:50 to go, and then again at 79-79 with :52 left on the clock.  Xavier Norris hit a floater in the lane with :35 to give the Braves the lead 81-79, and then Norris then knocked down two big free throws with :07.3 left to give the Braves a four point lead and the road win.

“This was a very entertaining game that had the feel of a state tournament game, but unfortunately for us, we came up just short against a hot-shooting C-EB team.  Once again, we jumped out to a strong start, but we allowed C-EB to gain some momentum with some careless turnovers and missed shot opportunities.  Credit to them, they seized the momentum and then got really hot from the perimeter in the second half, and many of their made three pointers were from well beyond the NBA-range.  We knew coming in that Norris and LeBeau were great shooters who were capable of putting up a lot of points, and they did just that.  I am very proud of our team for fighting hard to the finish and finding a way to get the game into overtime; I feel we had our chances to come out on top, but it just wasn’t meant to be.  I think this game can make our team a lot better and that we learned some things that we really need to work on to continue playing teams tough.  Every game on the rest of our schedule will be very tough and we will need to improve offensively and defensively to find success throughout the rest of the season,” said head coach Jason Fersdahl.

The Quarriers finished 29-66 (44%) from the field, 8-21 (38%) from three-point area, and 15-25 (60%) from the free-throw line.  They picked up 51 total rebounds as a team, had 11 steals, 18 assists, and turned the ball over 23 times.  Zach White finished with 21 points and 10 rebounds.  Cody Nielsen had 12 points and 12 rebounds.  Zane Schumaker finished with 17 points, and Ty Hoglund had 14 points.  Creighton LeBeau led Cheyenne-Eagle Butte with 29 points and 11 rebounds.  Norris finished with 26 points and 10 rebounds.

Dell Rapids falls to 6-2 on the year.  The Quarriers will host Garretson in a non-conference game on Tuesday, January 21st.
