Cubs Hold off Cardinals for Home Win

The Alcester-Hudson Cubs football team held off a late rally by the St Mary Cardinals on Friday, October 11th.  The Cubs took the win 28-22, giving St Mary their first loss of the season.

Jose Topete-Lopez scored on a one-yard touchdown in the opening quarter to give the Cubs a 6-0 lead.  Tommy Walth added a five-yard run in the second quarter to make the score 12-0.  St Mary got a 68-yard touchdown pass and then a two-point conversion to cut the lead to 12-8.  Walth would add a three-yard touchdown run and two point conversion for the Cubs to increase the lead to 20-8.  Ethan Bovill had a punt return for a touchdown and then made a two-point conversion late in the second quarter.  The Cubs led 28-8 at halftime.

Neither team would score in the third quarter.  St Mary put together a rally in the fourth quarter.  The Cardinals had a six-yard touchdown run to cut the lead in half, 28-14.  Later in the quarter, St Mary had an 18-yard touchdown pass and two-point conversion to make the score 28-22, but the Cardinals ran out of time to complete the comeback.

Alcester-Hudson had 219 yards of total offense, 175 rushing yards and 44 passing yards.  St Mary finished with 297 yards of offense, 114 rushing yards and 183 passing yards.  Walth finished with 19 carries for 95 yards and two touchdowns.  Evan Brown had eight carries for 63 yards.  Walth was 3-5 passing for 17 yards.  Bovill was 1-1 passing for 27 yards.  Brown had a catch for 27 yards.  Walth had 9.5 tackles.  Brown finished with eight tackles, and Bovill had 7.5 tackles.  Jackson Meyer added four tackles, and Evan Haak had an interception.
