Cubs Softball Places Fourth at State Tournament

The Alcester-Hudson Cubs softball team took fourth place at the State B Tournament held in Aberdeen Thursday, May 30th through Saturday, June 1st.  The Cubs finished their 2024 season with an overall record of 19-8.

Alcester-Hudson 7, Florence/Henry 5

In the opening round of the tournament on Thursday, the Cubs held off the Falcons to advance to the semifinals.  Florence/Henry scored the first run of the game in the top of the first.  The Cubs responded with three in the bottom of the inning for a 3-1 lead.  The score remained 3-1 until the bottom of the fourth.  The Cubs added three more runs to extend the lead to 6-1.  The Falcons plated two runs in the top of the fifth to cut the lead in half, 6-3.  Alcester-Hudson scored one more run in the bottom of the sixth. Florence/Henry rallied for two runs in the top of the seventh, but the Cubs stopped the rally to earn the win.

Emma Solberg had two hits, including a double, and an RBI.  Emma Moller added a double and an RBI.  Elly Doreing, Jaeley Christensen, and Sarah Ebert all had a single and an RBI each.  E. Moller pitched seven innings and allowed five runs, three earned, on five hits and two walks with nine strikeouts.

Chester 10, Alcester-Hudson 4

Despite outhitting the Flyers, Chester took advantage of five errors to get a 10-4 win over the Cubs in the semifinals.  Alcester-Hudson scored the first run in the bottom of the second inning.  Chester scored four times in the top of the third to take the lead for good.  The Cubs cut the lead to 3-2 with a run in the bottom of the third, but Chester scored three more times in the top of the fourth for a 7-2 lead.  Alcester-Hudson added two runs in the bottom of the fifth.  Chester, however, added three insurance runs in the top of the sixth for the 10-4 score.

E. Moller had two hits, including a double, and an RBI.  Doering also had two hits, one a double, and an RBI.  Jenna Manning and Delta Pies both finished with a single and an RBI.  Solberg, Christensen, Ebert, and Alexis Gray all had one hit each.  E. Moller pitched seven innings and allowed 10 runs, but just three earned, on five hits and three walks with nine strikeouts.

Scotland/Menno 11, Alcester-Hudson 5

In the 3rd/4th place game, the Trappers scored all 11 of their runs late in the game to earn the 11-5 win.  The Cubs took a 3-0 lead after scoring a run in the bottom of the second and two more in the bottom of the third.  Scotland/Menno took the lead in the top of the fourth, 4-3, after four runs.  The Cubs took the lead back with two runs in the bottom of the fourth for 5-4 score.  The Trappers, however, scored five in the top of the fifth and then two more in the top of the sixth.

Christensen had two doubles and an RBI.  E. Moller had two hits, one a double, and an RBI.  Paxtyn Moller also had two hits.  Ebert finished with a single and an RBI.  Solberg, Doering, and Gray all had one hit each.  E. Moller pitched seven innings and allowed 11 earned runs on 13 hits and two walks with 10 strikeouts.
