Cubs Girls Basketball Team Starts Season with Two Wins

The Alcester-Hudson Cub girls basketball team started their 2022-2023 season with two wins on back-to-back nights.  After having the opening game delayed by a day, the Cubs hosted the Gayville-Volin Raiders on Friday, December 9th and then traveled to Menno to play the Wolves on Saturday, December 10th.

Alcester-Hudson 42, Gayville-Volin 38

The Cubs trailed the Raiders after each of the first three quarters, but outscored Gayville-Volin 17-12 in the final quarter for the win.  The Raiders held a three-point lead, 10-7, after the first quarter.  The Cubs cut the lead to one point by halftime at 20-19.  Both teams scored six points in the third quarter, and Gayville-Volin led 26-25 heading into the fourth quarter.

Alcester-Hudson finished the game shooting 32% (19-60) overall, just 1-7 from three-point area, and 3-7 from the free-throw line.  The Cubs had a total of 44 team rebounds and 11 turnovers.

Elly Doering had 25 points, 14 rebounds, and two blocked snots.  Alexis Gray finished with five points and five rebounds.  Ella Serck added four points, 12 rebounds, 2 assists, and two steals.  Carly Patrick also had four points.

Alcester-Hudson 44, Menno 35

The Cubs followed Friday’s win with a road win at Menno on Saturday.  Alcester-Hudson slowly expanded their lead throughout the game.  They led 14-12 at the end of the first quarter, but pushed that lead to 24-19 by halftime.  The Cubs extended the lead by one, 32-26 by the end of the third quarter and then outscored the Wolves 12-9 in the final quarter for the win.

Alcester-Hudson shot 25% (12-48) overall in the game, 45% (5-11) from three-point area, and converted on 15 of 29 free-throw attempts.  They had a total of 22 team rebounds, 13 steals, but turned the ball over 15 times.

Gray had a team-high 16 points along with four steals, two assists, and a rebound.  Doering had 11 points, six rebounds, and four steals.  Serck finished with six points, six rebounds, and three assists.  Kayleigh Thompson added five points and three rebounds.
