Dell Rapids St Mary Holds Fall Sports Banquet

Dell Rapids St Mary High School held a fall sports team awards banquet on Tuesday, November 14th.  A potluck meal was served at 6:00 p.m. for the football, volleyball, competitive cheer, and cross country teams.  During the banquet, several Dell Rapids St Mary athletes earned awards.  Congratulations to all the award winners!

Three Cardinals Earn DVC Volleyball Honors

DRSM LogoThree Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal volleyball players were recognized by the Dakota Valley Conference for the 2017 season.  Senior Cassy Geraets and Junior Maddie Schwebach were named to the DVC All-Conference team.  Senior Adyn Heinricy was an Honorable Mention.

Cardinal Volleyball Season Ends in Region 4B

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal volleyball team’s season game to an end in the second round of the Region 4B Tournament on Tuesday, October 31st, in Madison.  The Cardinals lost in straight sets to the #1 seed Chester Flyers by scores of 25-6, 25-13, 25-15.

Cassie Mullaney led the team on the offensive end with four kills in the match.  Veronica Beck had three kills, while Cassy Geraets, Rhiannon Glazier, and Maddie Schwebach all had two kills each.  Glazier also finished with two ace serves and a dig.  Adyn Heinricy had nine digs.  Mullaney and Schwebach each had a block at the net.  Geraets had 14 set assists for St Mary.

The Cardinals finish their season with a record of 11-19.

Cardinal Volleyball Wins Region 4B Opener

DRSMvsMC_VB_10-30-17The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals earned an opening-round win of the Region 4B Tournament on Monday, October 30th, at Dell Rapids St Mary High School.  The #8 seeded Cardinals defeated the #9 seed Mitchell Christian Golden Eagles in straight sets by scores of 27-25, 25-23, 25-23.

The entire match was back and forth.  In the opening set, neither team had a lead of more than two or three points.  The Golden Eagles rallied after trailing 23-21 late in the set to take a 24-23 lead.  The Cardinals scored the next two points to regain the lead at 25-24.  After Mitchell Christian tied the set at 25-25, St Mary scored the next two points for the win.

Mitchell Christian seemed to be in position to win the second set after getting out to a five-point late in the second set.  The Golden Eagles lead 19-13.  St Mary scored three in a row to cut the lead to 19-16.  After a Golden Eagle point to push their lead to 20-16, the Cardinals went on a 7-2 run to take a 23-22 lead.  St Mary closed out the set scoring two of the final three points to get the come-from-behind win.

The first part of the third set played out much like the first set.  Neither team was able to build a lead of more than a point or two until the Golden Eagles rallied to take a 15-11 lead.  The Cardinals rallied once again to tie the set at 17-17.  The two teams went back and forth again with the score getting tied at 18-18, 19-19, 20-20, and 21-21.  The Cardinals rallied for the next three points to get to match point at 24-21.  The Golden Eagles cut the lead to 24-23, but a kill by Cassy Geraets ended the match.

St Mary will now play the #1 seed Chester Flyers on Tuesday, October 31st, in the next round of the Region 4B Tournament.  The match will be held in Madison at 5:00 p.m.

St Mary Cardinals Fall in Volleyball Regular Season Finale

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals had their senior night recognition during the final regular season home match on Monday, October 23rd.  The Cardinals hosted the De Smet Bulldogs in their final match.  De Smet came away with a straight set win by scores of 25-14, 25-19, 25-22.

Maddie Schwebach led the team with six kills on the night.  Cassy Geraets added four kills, while Cassie Mullaney had three kills.  Adyn Heinricy had nine digs and two ace serves.  Ella Heinitz, Geraets, and Carly Maxwell all had two digs each.  Geraets led the team with 18 set assists.

St Mary finishes the regular season with a 10-19 record.

Cardinals 2-2 at DVC Volleyball Tournament

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals volleyball team finished 2-2 at the Dakota Valley Conference Volleyball Tournament on Saturday, October 14th in Elkton.  St Mary played Elkton-Lake Benton and Castlewood in the first round of pool play, and then the Cardinals played Estelline and Oldham-Ramona/Rutland in the Bronze Pool to end the day.

St Mary lost their match against Elkton-Lake Benton by set scores of 25-14, 25-11.  Maddie Schwebach had two kills in the match.  Cassie Mullaney, Rhiannon Glazier, and Veronica Beck all had one kill.  Cassy Geraets had six set assists and one ace serve.  Adyn Heinricy had 11 digs.

The Cardinals also lost to Castlewood by scores of 26-24, 25-7.  Glazier and Beck both had three kills in the match.  Mullaney had two kills, and Ella Heintiz had one kill.  Heinricy had four digs and two ace serves.  Geraets had 11 set assists and an ace.

St Mary then earned two wins in the Bronze Pool.  The Cardinals defeated Estelline by scores of 25-22, 26-24.  Schwebach had six kills.  Mullaney added five kills.  Heinricy led the team with four digs.  Carly Maxwell had three digs.  Geraets had 20 set assists and two ace serves.  St Mary also had a win over Oldham-Ramona/Rutland by scores of 24-26, 25-21, 25-17.  Beck had nine kills and three ace serves.  Glazier had nine kills, six digs, and an ace.  Mullaney finished with eight kills.  Schwebach had six kills.  Heinricy had 17 digs in the match.  Geraets finished with 36 set assists and six digs.

The Cardinals record now stands at 10-17 on the season.  St Mary will travel to Freeman Academy/Marion on Tuesday, October 17th.

Cardinal Volleyball Falls Short at Deubrook

DRSM LogoAfter starting the match on fire, the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals were cooled by the Deubrook Area Dolphins on Thursday, October 12th at Deubrook High School.  The Cardinals opened the match with a big 25-9 first set win, but the Dolphins won the next three sets by scores of 25-12, 25-11, 25-16 to win the match.

Maddie Schwebach paced St Mary with nine kills.  Veronica Beck and Rhiannon Glaizer both had five kills.  Cassie Mullaney added four kills.  Schwebach also finished with three blocks.  Adyn Heinricy had 15 digs to lead the Cardinals.  Cassy Geraets had eight digs.  Carly Maxwell and Glazier both had five digs.  Geraets had 27 digs and three ace serves as well.

St Mary will play in the Dakota Valley Conference tournament on Saturday, October 14th, at Elkton High School.

Cardinal Volleyball Wins Thriller Over Estelline

DRSMvsEstelline_VB_10-5-17The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals won a thrilling five-set match against the Estelline Redmen on Thursday, October 5th, at Dell Rapids St Mary High School.  The Cardinals won by set scores of 24-26, 25-21, 13-25, 25-18, 16-14.

After the being tied 2-2 in the first set, Estelline went on a 9-0 run to take an 11-2 lead.  The Cardinals were able to tie the match again at 23-23 and 24-24, but Estelline was able to come away with the win.

The Cardinals bounced back in the second set and took at 14-9 lead.  Estelline fought back to pull within a point at 16-15, but St Mary pulled away to tie the match at 1-1.  The third set started close with Estelline taking a slight 8-6 lead.  The Redmen then went on to close out the set on a 17-7 run to take a 2-1 lead.

The fourth set was close throughout most of the set.  Each team held small leads with St Mary holding a one-point advantage at 15-14.  The Cardinals then closed out the fourth set on a 10-4 run to even the match at 2-2 to force the fifth set.

The final set was back and forth.  The two teams were tied at 4-4, 7-7, and 9-9.  Estelline then rallied for four straight points to take a 13-9 lead.  The Cardinals answered with a 5-0 run to take a 14-13 lead.  Estelline tied the set at 14-14, but St Mary finished the win on kills by Cassy Geraets and Cassie Mullaney.

Mullaney finished with 10 kills and two ace serves.  Ella Heinitz had eight kills, one dig, and two ace serves.  Geraets had one kill, one block, five digs, four ace serves, and 33 set assists.  Rhiannon Glazier had seven kills, and Maddie Schwebach had five kills and two blocks.  Adyn Heinricy had 16 digs and two ace serves.

The Cardinals (8-13) will travel to Hendricks, MN on Tuesday, October 10th.

Cardinals Fall to Freeman at Home

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals fell in straight sets to the Freeman Flyers on Monday, October 2nd, at Dell Rapids St Mary High School.  Freeman won by set scores of 25-21, 25-21, 25-20.

Cassie Mullaney had six kills and five blocks.  Maddie Schwebach had four kills and two blocks.  Ella Heinitiz and Rhiannon Glazier both had three kills.  Cassy Geraets finished with 18 set assists, four digs and two blocks.  Adyn Heinricy had 16 digs defensively for St Mary.

St Mary, 7-13 on the season, will host Estelline on Thursday, October 5th.  The match can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Elks Stay Hot with Win over Cardinals

DRSMvsELB_VB_9-28-17The Elkton-Lake Benton Elks won their ninth match out of their last ten after defeating the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals in straight sets on Thursday, September 29th, at Dell Rapids St Mary High School.  Elkton-Lake Benton won by scores of 25-9, 25-17, 25-13.

Maddie Schwebach and Cassie Mullaney both had three kills in the match.  Rhiannon Glazier and Veronica Beck both had two kills.  Adyn Heinricy had three digs.  Carly Maxwell finished with two digs.  Mullaney and Beck were both credited with a block.  Ella Heinitz had 11 set assists.  The Elks were led by Hannah Krog with 18 kills, Karlie Christensen with 10 digs, and Callie Otkin with 40 set assists.

St Mary falls to 7-12 on the year.  The Cardinals will host Freeman on Monday, October 2nd.
