Playing in their second game in less than 24 hours, the Dell Rapids Quarrier boys had a come-from-behind win over the St Thomas More Cavaliers at the DWU Culver’s Classic in Mitchell on Saturday, February 10th. After trailing in each of the first three quarters, the Quarriers won 62-52.
The Cavaliers connected on nearly half of their three-point shots in the first half of the game. St Thomas More led by nine points after the first quarter at 20-11. The lead increased to 16 points, the largest of the game for the Cavaliers, with 3:53 to play in the second quarter. Dell Rapids was able to cut the lead back down to nine points by halftime at 31-22.
The Quarriers started to make their run in the second half. Dell Rapids cut the lead to five points by the end of the third quarter. St Thomas More still led 46-41. The Quarriers defense then held the Cavaliers to just six fourth-quarter points while scoring 21 to complete the come-from-behind win.
Mason Schmidt, named the game’s MVP, scored 18 points, had five rebounds, one assist, and one steal. Carson Rentz had 15 points and four assists. Logan Heim added 12 points and eight rebounds. Jeffrey Schuch ended with nine points, seven rebounds, four assists, and two blocked shots. Drew Van Regenmorter and Elijah Story both had four points each.
Dell Rapids (14-4) will play in Canton on Monday, February 12 as part of a girls and boys double header against the Canton Hawks.
