The Tri-Valley Mustangs lost their home and season opener to the 2020 football season on Friday, August 28th. The Mustangs lost a close, defensive battle to the Sioux Valley Cossacks 12-6.
Neither team’s offense was able to get much going in the first half in a huge defensive battle. The score remained 0-0 at halftime. Sioux Valley scored first with 6:25 to go in the third quarter with the two-point conversion failing. The score heading into the fourth quarter was 6-0 in favor of Sioux Valley.
The Cossacks got another score with 9:25 to play in the game to push their lead to 12-0. Tri-Valley cut the lead in half with 5:10 to go on a four-yard touchdown pass from Mason Mathieu to Cheston Fowlds. The two-point conversion was no good, and the score was 12-6. The Mustangs were unable to get the tying score, and Sioux Valley took home the win.
Tri-Valley finished the game with 42 rushing yards and 40 passing yards. Levi Hanson had seven carries for 28 yards to lead the team. Mathieu was 5-14 passing for 40 yards. Hanson had three catches for 32 yards, and Fowlds had the touchdown catch of four yards. Jaden Siemonsma led the team with eight tackles. Own Besmer, Ethan Nehlich, and Mathieu all ended with seven tackles each.
Tri-Valley (0-1) will have an open date as of now on Friday, September 4th. They will be back in action at home on Friday, September 11th against Vermillion.
