Marvin L. “Marv” Peterson, age 76, died Thursday, July 30, 2015 at his home following a lengthy battle with PSP (Progressive Supranuclear Palsy), a rare neurological disease. His funeral service will be 10:30 AM Monday, August 3 at Heritage Lutheran Church in Brandon. Marv was born on May 26, 1939 in Dell Rapids, SD, to Robert and Freida “Petie” (Gruening) Peterson. When Marv was three, his father passed away and Petie married Gene Marcher five years later. Marv was raised and received his education in Dell Rapids. After graduation from high school, he attended and graduated from the University of Minnesota with his degree in architecture class of 1962.
Marvin was united in marriage with Louise Taylor in Minneapolis and the couple was blessed with three children. On July 11, 1987, Marvin was united in marriage with Jolene “Jodi” Kruse-Peters and they made their home in Brandon, SD.
Marv began his career with Spitznagel architectural firm in Sioux Falls. Three of his designs were the Rapid City Convention Center, The HPER Center (Frost Arena) on the South Dakota State University campus in Brookings, SD and Risen Savior Catholic Church in Brandon. In 1976, Marv and two other partners started a new firm in Sioux Falls, Architecture Incorporated. In 1979, Marv was offered employment with Sioux Falls Construction Company in the commercial building area. While there, his main account was Avera McKennan Hospital, where he oversaw many new buildings and remodel projects. He retired in 2004 as a Vice President and co-owner of the company.
Grateful for sharing life with Marv are his wife, Jodi, Brandon, SD; three children: Pam Axelson, Lake Havasu City, AZ, Tana Patel and her husband, Monish of Indianapolis, IN, Grant Peterson and his wife, Megan, Milwaukee, WI; four grandchildren, Talon Brown, Logan and Colin Peterson and Hayden Patel; his brother, Al Peterson and his wife, Jan, Goodyear, AZ; his sister, Micki Kennison and her husband, Larry, Rapid City, SD; Jodi’s siblings, Marty Kruse and his wife, Karen, Monument, CO, Lynell Bonnes and her husband, Ray, Puyallup, WA; many nieces, nephews and cousins; and many great friends. Marv was preceded in death by his father, Robert Peterson; his mother, “Petie”; his step-father, Gene Marcher; and a son-in-law, Don Axelson.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial in Marvin’s name is preferred to Heritage Lutheran Church or a charity of the donor’s choice.
