Playing in their second straight road game to start the season, the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals earned their first victory with a 26-6 win over the Castlewood Warriors in Castlewood.
St Mary scored in the opening quarter on a two-yard run by Connor Libis for a 6-0 lead. Libis scored again in the quarter from the three-yard line to extend the lead to 12-0. After a turnover, Noah Olund added an 11-yard touchdown run in the second quarter. Libis scored the two-point conversion to give the Cardinals a 20-0 lead. Castlewood got a touchdown before halftime to make the score 20-6.
The final score for the Cardinals and the game was in the third quarter. Libis connected with Ty Brown on a 23-yard pass to give the Cardinals a 26-6 advantage.
The Cardinals finished with 364 yards of total offense, 313 rushing yards and 51 passing yards. Castlewood finished with 168 yards of offense, 85 rushing yards and 83 passing yards.
Nic Gaspar had 13 carries for 135 yards. Libis finished with 18 carries for 95 yards and two touchdowns. Gabriel Lindeman had 14 carries for 55 yards. Libis was also 5-7 passing for 51 yards and a touchdown. Brown had two catches for 33 yards and a touchdown. Ashaun Roach-Valandra had two catches for 10 yards. Libis had 5.5 tackles in the game. Roach-Valandra had 4.5 tackles with three sacks. Max Herber had three tackles with two sacks and two fumble recoveries.
St Mary (1-1) will have their first home game on Friday, September 4th when they host De Smet. The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.
