Big Sioux Media is proud to to continue the “Cardinal of the Month” campaign for the 2018-2019 school year! Every month students from Dell Rapids St Mary will be chosen to be recognized as “Cardinals of the Month”. We want to not only recognize the hard work that students put in the classroom with their studies, but also the great things they are doing inside the school and out in the community, such as being positive role models to younger students, lending a helping hand without asking, or community service. Administration and staff will be nominating and selecting students each month. Big Sioux Media will be recognizing those students on our website, presenting them with a certificate, and a 1/2 dozen cupcakes!
If you spot a student exhibiting the qualities listed in the community, and would like to nominate them for Cardinal of the Month, email us at firstname.lastname@example.org. We’ll send your comments to the appropriate school for the administration to consider them as a nominee!
October Cardinals of the Month
Dell Rapids St Mary Elementary School – Tegan Weinacht (2nd): Tegan is the son of Greg and Lisa Weinacht and is in the 2nd grade at St. Mary School. Tegan has an older sister Teri Schoeberl (sophomore) and a twin sister Tasha (2nd) who both attend St. Mary School.
Tegan is usually quiet and a bit shy, but he has the most wonderful manners. He is quick with a “please” and “thank you” and he waits patiently for his turn. He considers the feelings of others in the choices that he makes and tries to be fair. He has a bright and creative mind and is a good problem-solver, too. All of these characteristics make Tegan a great candidate for Cardinal of the Month. We are proud to call him a Cardinal! Congratulations Tegan!
Owen is the son of Ivan and Jean Vargas. Owen is the oldest of five children. Three of his sibling—Lucy (5th), Phoebe (3rd), and Hazel (PK)— attend St. Mary, while Milo (1-year-old) will one day as well. Though only a 7th grader, Owen is very involved in St. Mary already, as he participates in Football, Cross County, Basketball, and Track & Field.
Owen was selected as Cardinal of the Month as a 4th grader, and the qualities he showed when he was younger are still on full display today. One teacher explained, “Owen participates in a lot of things at St. Mary and he excels in all of them. He’s a top-notch student and top-notch kid.” Another teacher echoed those thoughts, saying, “Owen is unbelievably dedicated to his studies and rarely misses a point in class. He is just a great representative of St. Mary.” Even though Owen is very busy outside of school, his grades never slip. Owen was a straight-A student first quarter and is a straight-A student so far in the second quarter as well. Being a heavily involved student who still maintains excellent academic marks, all the while being incredibly kind and respectful to staff and students alike, makes Owen an easy choice as the 7-12 Cardinal of the Month for October. Congratulations Owen!
