Cardinal of the Month

Big Sioux Media and LaDelle and Fourth Coffeehouse are proud to partner together for the 2017-2018 “Cardinal of the Month” campaign! Every month students from Dell Rapids St Mary will be chosen to be recognized as “Cardinals of the Month”. We want to not only recognize the hard work that students put in the classroom with their studies, but also the great things they are doing inside the school and out in the community, such as being positive role models to younger students, lending a helping hand without asking, or community service. Administration and staff will be nominating and selecting students each month. Big Sioux Media will be recognizing those students on our website, presenting them with a certificate, and LaDelle and Fourth Coffeehouse will be rewarding those students with a 1/2 dozen cupcakes!

If you spot a student exhibiting the qualities listed in the community, and would like to nominate them for Cardinal of the Month, email us at We’ll send your comments to the appropriate school for the administration to consider them as a nominee!

May Cardinals of the Month

Dell Rapids St Mary Elementary School – Lukas Gaul (5th):  Lukas is the son of Allen and Kim Gaul and is the 4th grade at St. Mary School. Lukas has a brother, Levi who is in 5th grade also at St. Mary.

Lukas shows compassion for others in the classroom. He tries to do his best on his work and in his studies. He always uses manners, and he cares about those in his class. When he sees someone needs an extra hand, he steps right up to help without being asked. He truly loves his country and prays for world peace every single day. His kind spirit and uplifting smile make him a great candidate for Cardinal of the Month. We are proud to call him a Cardinal!  Congratulations Lukas!

Dell Rapids St Mary High School – Seth Bares (12th):  Seth is one of the newest alumni at St. Mary as he graduated on Friday, and he is the oldest child of Mark and Helen Bares. All four of his brothers attend St. Mary as well—Jon (9th), Kyle (7th), Joe (1st), and Eric (K) are all part of our St. Mary family.

Seth now holds the honor of being the first student to win the Cardinal of the Month award multiple times because of his selfless attitude. One teacher explained, “Whenever a student or teacher asks for help, Seth is always the first one to volunteer without hesitation.” Another teacher noted that same service attitude, saying “Not only does Seth help others when they ask, he helps others when they don’t ask. If Seth sees someone working on something or in need of help, he just starts helping them.” At graduation on Friday Seth was recognized as an Outstanding Volunteer for completing over 40 hours of community service each of his four years of high school. 40 hours is the minimum for that award, and Seth far exceeded that. He was also recognized for being an Honors Graduate and a Regents Scholar, which shows the type of well-rounded person he is. For embodying the spirit of service that St. Mary strives to instill in our students—and for being a very kind and respectful student and person—Seth is an excellent choice to become the first student to earn Cardinal of the Month twice. Congratulations Seth!
