Cardinal of the Month

Big Sioux Media and Luv My Sweets are proud to to continue the “Cardinal of the Month” campaign for the 2018-2019 school year!  Every month students from Dell Rapids St Mary will be chosen to be recognized as “Cardinals of the Month”. We want to not only recognize the hard work that students put in the classroom with their studies, but also the great things they are doing inside the school and out in the community, such as being positive role models to younger students, lending a helping hand without asking, or community service. Administration and staff will be nominating and selecting students each month. Big Sioux Media will be recognizing those students on our website, presenting them with a certificate, and a 1/2 dozen cupcakes from Luv My Sweets!

If you spot a student exhibiting the qualities listed in the community, and would like to nominate them for Cardinal of the Month, email us at We’ll send your comments to the appropriate school for the administration to consider them as a nominee!

March Cardinals of the Month

Dell Rapids St Mary Elementary School – Gus Herber (1st):  Gus is the son of Matt and Tracy Herber and is in the 1st grade at St. Mary School. Gus has two older siblings, Max (sophomore) and Emersyn (4th grade) also attending St. Mary.

According to his nomination, Gus works hard every day in class. He is a very good listener and consistently follows directions. He is polite and courteous and is always smiling. He is kind and caring and is a good friend to others. These traits make Gus a great candidate and we are proud to call Gus a St. Mary Cardinal!  Congratulations Gus!

Dell Rapids St Mary High School – Courtney Brown (9th):  Courtney is the youngest of 4 children born to Jacque and Jason Brown. Courtney’s older sister Nicole graduated from St. Mary in 2015, and her older brother Luke graduated from St. Mary in 2018. She also has her twin brother, Ty, in class with her, though Courtney is 30 seconds older. This year Courtney is participating in Competitive Cheer, Volleyball, Football Sideline Cheer, Basketball, Track & Field, FFA, and was a member of the 1st semester ‘A’ Honor Roll. This is Courtney’s first time receiving the 7-12 award, but she was recognized for this as a 6th graders as well.

Courtney’s name is one that comes up regularly for Cardinal of the Month nominations because of her cheery and upbeat personality. One teacher explained, “I always see Courtney smiling and happy. No matter what is going on she doesn’t let it affect her positivity and the way she acts or treats others.” Another teacher added, “Courtney always has such a good attitude. She is always inquiring about assignments so she can learn more and is always prepared for class and ready to go.” When Courtney received the K-6 award in 2015, her teacher at the time said “Courtney is always willing to help and she tries her hardest at everything she does. She is a joy to have in everything.” In the 3+ years since that award, Courtney has not changed. She is a hardworking individual who is always willing to lend a hand, and her teachers and coaches love having her in class and on their teams. Courtney is incredibly well deserving of the award of 7-12 Cardinal of the Month for the month of March. Congratulations Courtney!
