The Dell Rapid St. Mary Cardinals improved to 3-0 with a 44-28 victory over the Colman/Egan Hawks on Friday, September 19th, in Colman.
On the first play of the game, Colman/Egan fumbled the ball and was recovered by St Mary. St. Mary capitalized on the turnover with Josh Brown’s first touchdown of the night. On the next drive, the Hawks turned the ball over on downs, and the Cardinals marched down the field scoring on Brown’s second touchdown of the night. Colman/Egan punted on their next possession and pinned St. Mary’s back on their own 10 yard-line. Brown scored his third touchdown of the quarter on a 70-yard run.
Colman/Egan then started their comeback. After Brown’s three touchdowns, Riley Voelker had touchdown runs of 50 and 75 yards to cut St.
Mary’s lead to 18-14 at halftime. The Hawks struck first in the 3rd quarter with a touchdown reception by Josh Giese to give Colman/Egan their only lead of the game at 20-18.
St Mary regained control of the game from that point. The Cardinals outscored the Hawks 26-8 the rest of the game for the win.
Brown finished the game with 230 yards and three touchdowns. The Cardinals were led by Dalton Houska defensively with six tackles and a fumble recovery. Noah Fiegen had 5.5 tackles and a sack as well.
Head Coach Ross Flemmer said that the Cardinals still have a lot of work to do to be prepared for Arlington, especially cutting down on the penalties. St Mary was flagged for more than 10 penalties for the third straight week.
The Cardinals will take on the Arlington Cardinals in Arlington on Friday, September 26th.
